Rep Power: 0 | | New To This Forum... My Dear Friends,
Surfed into this forum while doing a little online searching for more information on the Art I practice (Chang Wu Chi Lin, incidentally).
I would ask in advance that you excuse the forum name - I use this one on practically every forum I participate on. The pseudonym started as an inside joke on the Spyderco Knife Forums and sort of stuck.
I am glad to have found this place - I look forward to doing a lot of reading here!
My very best to you all, my Martial brothers and sisters!

Quite. I routinely train with and carry the Emerson Combat Karambit, as well as a smaller Spyderco Cricket for normal cutting chores. Boker Knives USA are kind enough to allow me to formally test some of their newer knives from time to time.
On the off-chance I am not carrying the Emerson karambit I normally carry a Spyderco Waved Endura. I own blunt training versions of both the Endura and karambit, allowing me to safely practice techniques solo and with an opponent.
I also hold instructor certification in Personal Protection and Basic Pistol with the NRA.
Cover all my bases, so to speak.

Hi Kurt nice to meet you. That is a really sharp ( no pun ) blade, do you train with doubles?
I can see how effective the tiger claw design would be in actually, using the weapon as an extension of the hand.
How long is that? Does it fold/lock? How is it held for attack purposes? |

My Sifu is Russell Hughart - he holds classes in Summersville, Nicholas County, WV. His Sifu is Master Charles Brown in Virginia Beach, VA.

I train to be essentially ambidextrous with the karambit - unlike with other designs, the ring permits a secure grip on the tool even when using your hand for grappling and such, unlike other knife designs. Doubles are fun, and I often train with live blade in my strong hand and trainer in the off hand. | “ | Originally

That would be forward grip you are describing. While I do play with those techniques, karambit is most effectively used in reverse grip (ring on the index finger). From that position it can be extended and retracted into different grips to change the effective range of the tool. It is also fun and effective to spin (think: buzzsaw) from this position *if* you pay attention to your wrist angle. Otherwise you go through a great number of band-aids. Always remember - the first rule of training with a karambit is to obtain a trainer. In fact, I suggest getting a trainer before getting a live blade - the blood you save will be your own.
(BTW - My instructor for Albo Kali Silat has posted several online videos on his site explaining karambit technique. Anyone wanting a link drop me a PM or email.)
The karambit is essentially an Indonesian design, but I find that it incorporates incredibly well into the Tiger Fighting Set in Chang Wu Chi Lin. | “ | Originally

Blade length on the Emerson is only 2.6 inches, which is more than sufficient for most purposes. Though a fixed blade design is available, I prefer the folding version - it is a Walker linerlock. The most effective way to hold it is index finger through the ring. Construction is G-10 scales, titanium liners, 154CM blade with corrosion-resistant coating, and Emerson Wave blade opening feature.
Unlike straight blades the curved blade of the karambit contours the human body, making it less likely that the blade will slip off of the target without generating a cut. In the event that a cut is impossible (heavy or protective clothing, etc.) the blade is still useful for controlling limbs, due again to its curvature. It is fast, light, difficult to see in motion and ridiculously difficult to disarm (though it is possible if you have a lot of moxie and are very quick).
If you have more in-depth questions please drop me a PM or email and I'll do my best to answer them, or to direct you to a resource that can.
My very best to you all, my friends!

Sifu Decker passed away back in '97 if memory serves. All Chi Lin styles owe their heritage to him, including ours. Chang Wu Chi Lin is the most no-frills, basic version of the Chi Lin Arts. The Chi Lin family is like none other that I have ever encountered.
BTW - I have it on good authority that Chi Lin Weekend will happen again this October at Cedar Lakes, WV, should anyone want to attend.
