Chiau Kao

Did Chiau Kao study under Lam Sai Wing I ask this because I read that he did not, and it is in my school's lineage. Our lineage goes :

Wong Kay Ying
Wong Fei Hung
Lam Sai Wing

Im afraid that is a big controvery in Hung Ga circles.
The Chiau Kao linage claim there though Lam Sai Wing. The Lum Jo linage clain Chiau Kao was Lum Jo's student. The truth proberly rests somewhere in between. There are pictures of Chiau Kao with Lam Sai Wing so im sure he learnt something off him. However Chiau Kao himself has stated and even writen in Lum Jo's student book that he is a student of Lum Jo. Part of the issue is that Chiau Kao is older than Lum Jo but not senior. Lum Jo was the senior at only 22 which made things pretty inflamatory in the old Hung Ga schools back in Hong Kong. Lum Jo also took over teaching at Lam Sai Wings school so he was the main instructor there for a long time. Hence you could be going to Lam Sai Wings school yet learning off Lum Jo. Who in that case do you list as your linage You can see how it gets complicated easily.
The best thing to do is simply follow your own linages history, the whole Hung family are trying to move away from this debate and get back to doing what we do best. They have all agreed to live and let live. Follow your own history and no one should question it, if they do just remind them its not possible to prove and a pointless debate.
Chiau Kao was one of the best of his generation and a famous fighter. Either way your lucky to have him a part of your linage.

Was Chiau Kao one of the Kwantung ten tigers

Lam Sai Wing......

The ten tigers played a large role in the develpment of Hung Ga without even directly trying. The only Hung Ga master from Canton linage proven to be from the Ten Tigers is Wong Kai Ying. His son Wong Fai Hung is often said to have been a member but there is no evidence to support this. The big thing was that Wong Kai Ying was very respected in the group and his son was a martial arts prodagy. They all taught him various skills and many think this is where the drunken in hung comes from as well as elements of lions roar and Lama ga. Still the main contribution from the Ten Tigers was made by Tit Kiu Sam who was actualy one of the leaders of the ten tigers and taught Wong Fai Hung the skill or Iron Wire boxing and meteor hammer. It would be pretty safe to say a lot of the development of modern Hung Ga was helped along by the Ten Tigers.
As to Chiau Kao and Lam Sai Wing they are both to late for the Ten Tigers.
Chiau Kao and Lam Sai Wing actualy both studied in Hong Kong not so much China.
