Rep Power: 127 | | | Yes, but that's quite a long list IMO. I believe that your wrist plays an important role in cutting.

LOL...... I can see that. A roll of the wrist works on any motion, especially sweep like motions. Instead of sweeping, the roll will produce a cut. If you think about it, a Mantis type hook also involves a roll, but at the same time it also cuts. Although this may not be how certain styles use them.
It's all in the wrist.

Rep Power: 127 | | | This is the result of one soft cut by my teacher as he was trying to think of a drill for us to do.
It started as an instant knot, then I rolled it out, put jow. Next day it turned into a bruise, but with striations in them. Now the bruise is slowly spreading down my arm.

Rep Power: 5 | | | I dunno if you could classify a Phoenix Eye Fist as a cutting move, but it can easilly break the skin and cause alot of blood. It's done by extending the index finger so the 2nd knuckle points out, and then resting the thumb against the side of it for support. Of course, as with nearly all Zui Quan fist techniques, the wrist plays a vital role in it's effectiveness. The attack is meant to hit the skull right beside the eye, in front of the temple, and fracture the skull which possibly results in death. Of course, it will hurt no matter where it hits if done properly.

Rep Power: 127 | | | I'd consider the phoenix eye strike more of a pressure strike than it is cutting. Cutting involves rolling of the wrist, not turning... but rolling.

Rep Power: 35 | | | Ditto jawsman... it's a directed pressure point strike. Not saying it couldn't cut skin if it pops something thin like at the nose, but it's really a directed strike.

Rep Power: 4 | | | On the subject of single knuckle fist formations,
I have always prefered the support and safety of using the middle finger knuckle, I think its called Dragon Fist rather than the Phoenix Eye, any expierience or opinions on that,
granted i havent conditioned the Phoenix eye on the makiwara, but essentially it feels unsupported in comparison to an unconditioned middle knuckle formation.
and on subject, I dont see either as a 'cutting' or 'glancing' strike, definatly vital point strikes IMO. |

Rep Power: 35 | | | Jim... you're referring to the Dragon's Head with tmiddle knuckle. I'm not comfortable with that one at all (shape of my hand), but I do condition my Phoenix eye with a sand bag. I wouldn't advise the same with a makiwara... *ouch*
