Rep Power: 4 | | | My school trains in uniforms. I''m not nuts on the idea because I hate Gi tops. The pants are fine, but the real question is: if you don't wear a uniform, why wear a belt/shash? Or do you?

I have a sash, I don't often wear it, the only times I do is when there are new students(so they know the seniority), visitors from other schools, demonstrations/tournaments.
I don't find that a sash/belt really proves anything, it's nice if it's colored and has nice patches/logos and stuff, but the real proof is in the pudding as they say, your skills/abilities/and knowledge tell others what your level is.

The colored sash ranks are a fairly new convention adapted from the Japanese model. Traditional sashes, color didn't matter. Like Mei Hua says, the proof was in your skills.

If your skills vary that much on a day to day basis, you should probably retire, you didn't have much skill in the first place.

Rep Power: 6 | | I thought uniforms were used as not to tear you weaker everyday cloths.
I also thought color belts and sashes were used so your teacher can tell at glance what techniques you need to work on.
and yes i agree harsh but true.
The only tradition that is important to me is the one about hard work.

Rep Power: 36 | | | What the heck was this thread about to begin with? Oh, yeah...the question was are traditional uniforms and training halls important to you? To me...no, not at all. However, there are some in the group-and the world, for that matter-that train in MA to touch upon the culture that is ingrained in that certain MA. For those, then yes, uniforms and training hall authenticity is important. IMO, though, it all comes down to the meat of the meal: the style you are practicing, not the fly clothes you are wearing or the sweet digs you are practicing your Tan Tuei in...heck, I look like a shirtless Paul Bunyan and I train in a clearing among some mesquite trees...pretty "country", but it is what I do...and I don't long for silky PJ's and a cold AC, either. |

If you don't know jaws, we're going to have to have one heck of a serious discussion
*Edit* I'm the 4th person to post, not the next, so I think that allows for commentary.
