What I was trying to say was... your uniform has nothing to do with your abilities. Neither does your teacher, or his teacher. It all boils down to.... can you fight when it hits the nitty gritty?

Pheewwww!
I was still trying to figure out how to have a talk about the Birds/Bees with another adult, fate is good when the S--- hits the fan, always looks after you to get ya outa tight spaces!
And I completely agree with your statement, I've seen people in super fancy uniforms with pretty belts that couldn't fight a fly off their own nose, and I've seen people in mismatched rags that could whoop serious a$$, though vice-versa also applies.
It's not what you wear, it's what you got, that makes all the difference.

Rep Power: 8 | | Traditional uniforms aren't all that important to me, but heck, I dig the black gi.
As many others have mentioned earlier, a well presented training hall also
helps students get into the correct frame of mind.

It should also be a reminder to behave well while wearing it, since you represent your club. Standing round outside the kwoon with a tab in your gob while wearing a gi is not a great image. Plus MA uniforms can often be more durable than regular sportswear.
Having a dedicated kwoon can work well if developed as a team. The students can take a sense of ownership for the place, and invest in better equipment.
It just depends on how you identify with these things. I remember at a jujitsu club one of the students fluffed his technique then stood to attention in front of the sensei and cried "permission to repeat the technique sensei!!!!". The sensei was dumbstruck and I p**sed myself. I think the lad was investing a little too much passion into his practice. Students can get a little too "mysterious taoist priest" if you give them a chinese jacket with cuffs.

"NO SENSEI!"
aah, me...Cobra Kai, do or die.
When I used to teach martial arts, I wore my uniform pants with a t-shirt and sandals EVERYWHERE outside of the kwoon. It wasn't b/c I wanted everyone to know my business...it was b/c I was too poor to buy real clothes. I had to buy new clothes if I ever went on a date or something. Anyway, it's not the clothes that make the man, (or woman)...but, I can see where a touch of "tradition" could help promote the school and give the students a bigger sense of pride...I agree with you there Sun. |

I have never been a huge fan of coming to kungfu classes in street clothes or tracksuits and sneakers. I know that it's the person and the training that is important, not the clothing, but still I can't help feeling that something is missing. I also think a dedicated kwoon is a big plus. Am I alone here? | ” | |
I myself use to feel this way, but my thoughts on the subject have changed. I loved the idea of being traditional with the uni's and oldschool training and termonology, but is it really useful in this day and age?
If you want to carry on the tradition of your art, then i think you want to hold on to all those things and keep to tradition. But if you're looking to teach martial arts and help people protect themselves, then all that traditional stuff is not needed. I'm Mr. Traditional when it comes to my training, but i realised that how helpful or useful is wearing gung fu pants and wearing a sash in the real world?
if you're training arts like Ju Jutsu or judo that teach you chokes and such with a gi, that's a bit different. You can carry that over to your everyday clothes in most cases. But to me it all depends on what you're looking for in your training. If you want the history and tradition then, it's nice to have that stuff, but most just want to train. So it's not important if it's in shorts or sweats.
