Rep Power: 0 | | | There are some Kata movements which can be intereperted as throws and takedowns. My instructor taught some throws and takedowns but they aren't a staple part of the curriculum. |

Rep Power: 111 | | | In my style very few throws were taught. This was primarily because our facility (a gymnaseum) did not have padded floors. There are a few throws, but as Migo stated they aren't a staple. That's one reason in my class I incorporated more throwing and joint locking in the curriculum.

Rep Power: 63 | | I have seen only a couple of throws in most styles of karate. Kempo has a few joint lock throws. The two I usually see are a leg sweep and a very basic hip throw. Know a few people that do shotokan and they tried jujitsu at our school and they said they have never even seen any of the throws or jujitsu techniques other than striking...they were both black belts...so I dont know about that

Rep Power: 111 | | The theory is this. We Karate folk are so da'gum good at punching that when someone goes to throw us BHAM!!!
Punch 'em with our powerful fist.
They try to grapple us BHAM!!!
Punch 'em with our powerful fist.
How can you combat that
Actually its just that throws are not taught in the slightest. Most traditional forms have throws hidden in there, and we are taught that such and such is a throw, but we never work on the throw itself. That's something I personally disagree with.

Rep Power: 63 | | I agree, I have seen some karate forms performed and to me the throws and joint locks were sooooo obvious...but then I hear the instructor explain the meaning of the forms...and its also obvious he doesnt have a clue that they are even there. I think they just didnt get used and gradually got lost. That is something I have wanted to do for a while, go over some different styles forms and point out the throws and locks.....I have seen quite a few kung fu forms this way also...I think it would be fun...and a good learning experience.

Rep Power: 8 | | | `forms thats exactly why forms are important because over time people will stop using elements of a tyle if it doesnt suit them and with forms you can dig up movements that havent been used in a while. Of course this only goes for when people dont change the forms. |

Rep Power: 10 | | I don't know a whole lot about karate, but I know enough. I know a little (just a little, nothing much really) of wado-ruy karate-do. But I do know that there are throws and take downs in karate. They may not me focoused on as much, but they are there. I had only little training in karate, but I read a lot about various martial arts which makes me very knowledgable about sevaral topics in the martial arts, not just the ones I've had training in. Still wether it be karate, kung-fu, or capoeira. I say you should learn it regaurdless of what it consists of. All martial arts are benifical in some way or another. Learn all you can. Peace, and God bless.

Rep Power: 10 | | Throws in Karate? Not so much throws, but there are takedowns/hooks of the legs, ankles, feet. One simple maneuver stepping in, an elbow to the chest to knock the opponent off balance, and a sweep of the back of the near knee to take the opponent off his/her feet, followed by knife strike to the groin/stomach/throat, etc. There are other's, but that is one.
