Keep it real!

The sash is the wide belt that soooo many use as an actual belt for keeping there pants up in the old 70's style kung fu flicks. (Keep it real, yo!) And the different colors have been used in our system for some time now. I don't think there really was any when GM Ong first started teaching in the US. Of course back then they were doing 6 minute low stances as well. And they for rank would spar with another person of the rank they wanted and if they won they got it and other person had to step down. Soooooo, many things change in time.

Thanks alot for posting the link. Does anyone know on the website he sells Fut Ga books. My question is what is his Fut Ga based off of? Fut (denotes Buddhist) and Ga (Gar) represents a family. But what system of Buddhist family fist is it? Is it the Siu Lim Fut Ga? Hung Fut, etc...?

thanks again.

take care,
zach

The above web site contains some "light" reading material. Generally speaking, a well thought-out and reasoned web site. Enjoy!

Ugh ... "light" ... that was mean!

Well thought out, reasoned, but still doesn't show San Soo as being older than about 400 years. Also, did I miss them, but I saw no citations/notations for any of the claims made in the articles?

There's still a tremendous amount of skepticism about the Fujian Shaolin Temple ever existing.

I'd say that the existance of various offshoots of "the" Shaolin temple including some in Fujian is granted, but to think it can be traced which version of CMA was trained there by whom is more than optimistic. That's already extremely difficult for the old Shaolin one, and that was destroyed less than 100 years ago last time. Today people already claim that what todays "Shaolin monks" do is the real thing, because they learned from a random family somewhere around Shaolin or Dengfeng which was really really the really real old Shaolin stuff because they say so.

If "Sansoo" or however they write it is worth anything, then their practices produce remarkeable athletic and coordinative skills that are obvious to spot, and recogniseable skills in H2H struggle. Whatever the origin. If not - well.

Man with the plan will become famous soon enough
I have two schools on my doorstep that I am skeptical about. One is a branch that this thread is talking about. http://www.kungfusansoo.com/ I’m cynical about schools that claim they are Chinese but show very little Chinese customs (i.e. running around in karate gi and wearing colored belts…)

The other school practices a style called Yue chia? I’ve never heard of it. But I have driven by and seen a group of them out in the parking lot…up on there toes shadow boxing using jabs and right crosses (aka western style) I didn’t know Shaolin monks boxed western style?

The quality of instruction can very at these schools, some can be good, some cane be bad. Both of the schools in my area seem (I use the term lightly because I could be wrong) to be nothing but a conglomerate of martial techniques packaged (in a western light/view) and called bla bla bla….

The techniques that they are teaching could be effective…. that’s not the issue. If I’m studying a CMA, I want it to be a CMA not an interpretation of it or a gimmick that got me through the door.

Does that make sense?

Indeed it does make sense.

But surprisingly alot of CMA's are picking up boxing techniques because of it's effectiveness, many Chinese stylists are doing the same, go to HK and you will find many WMA schools.

IMO, it's best to blend everything that works, regardless of style.

Timoxe is on a distinguished road
Hello.....

Hello Everyone,
My name is Timothy and I am student of Kung Fu San Soo.

There is a vidoe clip of Jimmy H. Woo being interviewed, and giving some inmformation about San Soo. He also demonstrates some techniques and two forms. You can watch the video clip here.

http://www.kungfusansoostuff.com/jimmy/jmyclp1.html

Also there are some cool 1970s vintage Kung Fu San Soo video clips at

http://www.americansansoo.com/Videos...20Pictures.htm

These video clips have alot of forms and tecniques being demonstrated, so you can get more of an Idea about San Soo. Jimmy H. Woo also can be found in some of these video clips. These are old 8MM film so there is no sound and for some reason the guy left the sound of the projector on. Im not sure why, but anyway these clips have some of my favorite techniques. Hope you enjoy.

Hello Everybody!

Hello Everybody. I am new here. Great subject matter!

Hello Timoxe!
Hello Changfy. Just some additional info on the question you posted earlier about futga. It is more than just movements. It is a mental attitude. The movements are immediately known by quick shifting hips and steps and multiple (Usually 3) attacks made all in one motion. There are many different "versions" of futga. Many different Chinese Hungga styles utilize it in some capacity. Hungga and futga usually are grouped together. Both "styles" are modes of training. Hunga is physical. Futga is mental. Most of the time it is Fut-Hung. Occaisonally it is written Hung-Fut. The Hung-Fut school is known for its left handed striking techniques.Futga is an offensive art. Again-its mental as well as physical. Hope that helps some!
