Rep Power: 18 | | Plum Flower Post and other Stepping Drills Alright I am doing some more research on stepping drills. I was wondering who here has used plum flower posts methods for training? I know of a few different variations of this style of training including walking on top of posts, stepping through the planted poles in patterns and using them for various striking and dodging methods. Using bricks on the ground to walk atop of in both the meihua pattern and bagua patterns. As well as using bricks (or something similar) on the ground as obstacles to create god stepping patterns. I will gladly go into detail about each one of these methods I have done but I am looking for detail about them and other systems of stepping drills from other styles.
Anyone practice this sort of thing? Northern or southern? Most all of my training has been northern so I am interested to see if our nanquan brothers and sisters have any other tricks I can learn about...
Lets kick it

Rep Power: 220 | | | Well, seeing as it was my system that created them.....
We have a few methods. one being they start off close to the ground and increase in height as skill develops. The other being as how they go from stable and fixed in place to slightly loose so that it requires greater body control and balance to stay atop.
As for the drills, we start off with static stances then progress into set movement patterns, from here it progresses into doing forms which advance in difficulty from being easy to involving jumps and spins.
After these have been as mastered as one can make them you then start sparring on the posts, nothing trains balance, control and awareness better than having to move and stay upright while defending and attacking on them.

Rep Power: 18 | | | We currently do the same type of training within our system. Especially within our drunken style for the footwork and to build the lower body strength and agility. The only difference (maybe) is that we do our's upon coffee cans or paint cans. They tend to tip over and slide around, which makes it a little harder to keep the balance...thus, basically training balance (lol)!
I think the post/cans/whatever training is a good asset to just about any system. IMO anyways!
Thanks,

Rep Power: 220 | | | Something that works well is paint buckets filled with concrete, they don't tip, hold the weight and offer the same amount of foot space

Rep Power: 66 | | Hmmm.. first I've ever heard of a style claiming to have "created them"
We use them within Hak Fu Mun as well, in much of the same manner as already mentioned, but we also use them for hopping or skiping drills. These drills help to be able to create or close the distance between yourself and an opponent.

Wah Lum has them at the Orlando temple, but I've never trained on them. I'm quite certain we didn't invent them, so I don't have to argue. Actually there are 2 sets there, the original posts which are very narrow & only about half the foot will fit on them; and some new posts which are sturdy & wide. The original posts are too old to stand on safely.

Rep Power: 220 | | | Aye, coffee or paint cans filled with concrete work well too, they're portable and easy to get around and work just as good for the beginning stages
