I understand Sung, and fa jing.. I have felt them both on the giving and receiving end.. have I ever felt something as perfect as that video is displaying? No.. Have I ever pushed with a taiji master like him? not that I'm aware, but I have pushed with excellent people with great timing and technique and I didn't have to run away and fall down to know they were doing something right..
In my eyes what he is showing to the crowd is incorrect for what they're wanting to do. The guys falling down and running away stumbling are giving a false sense of judgement that this guy could do that to anyone, and he cant.
If he wants to display fa jing and timing because he has perfect structure and root, shove them around with them resisting some, not acting like Raggedy Ann and Andy..
Couldn't have labeled it any better. What is sad, and I think it was mentioned, is the students/practioners of his thinking they have or will develop the same type of mystical power. Guess they will learn a very valuable lesson if they ever enter a confrontation - or maybe they WILL knock the person 15 feet back and gain huge respect. That was supposed to be somewhat of a funny.
I mean I hate to knock the guy, but in my opinion I don't see that stuff happening - not the way he is doing and using it anyway.
Thanks,
-Ngfamilydude

ngfamilymember is exactly right.. having the expectation to accomplish something like that is going to be very bad for them when they actually try to do that..
btw I haven't gotten to push with ngfamilymember yet, but I have seen him throw around some more experienced people than me.. hehe

Compare that video to the ones of Ma Jiangbao in the Internal Arts section of the gallery. This guy is really doing all that "issue energy", that's why it does not look fake. And his students don't throw themselves, he throws them. They're just careful because they know what he can do. NOONE, noone in real life, has his feet sliding away from under him TO THE FRONT when trying to push someone and getting "countered". They slip away to the rear and you fall on your face, or you get pushed away. Those guys help a lot to jump forward and slide their feet out forward.

These guys aren't being compliant....they're acting...horribly might i add! Demonstrations like this are what cause people to get hurt. The unexperienced think this crap is real and they start training with this guy, next thing you know they're trying their Qi balls of fire on the neighborhood bully. I'm not doubting "Yoda's" techniques here, but this over acting crap that these guys are being moved by "the force" in this demo is borderline criminal. Stuff like this is and other charlatan hacks are what give TMA a bad name.

Right, exactly ... you put it better than I did, nkyshaolin.
Push hands has validity if one sees it for what it is: an exercise to develop sensitivity, awareness, and balance. There are different levels of the exercise that stress one or all of these facets. Learning these at a low level is a great way to teach students strengths & weaknesses in their stance, and how to observe, recognize and capitalize on an opponent's weaknesses.
I have seen competitors in push hands events who really understand the process & the point of the exercise, who can easily unbalance their opponents and -- if the opponent is doing that "shove shove" that inexperienced players do when they get frustrated -- will send them to the floor by simply letting them go. I've seen full-contact push hands training with bruises & broken noses. But I've never seen anyone get thrown backwards across a room by merely placing their fingertips on someone's arm.

So you come on here post one of our videos and have the gaul to say something about beginners doing forms, and then people smashing coconuts?? lol how about this video, how does your iron palm and fa jing measure up?
You know, it sounds to me like maybe FuPau pushes hands with the taiji master shown in the video, did we strike a nerve talking about your sifu or something?
You know I just re-read through this entire thing, I don't think anyone here has questioned this guys ability to push.. No one even questioned his credibility in Taiji.. All we all seem to be saying is this guy is using "the force" instead of all the things you said he was using..
I'm not saying he's using anything. All I've said is the video is a demo, and demos prove nothing as their main purpose is to drum up new business. I can't question his Taiji cred or actual ability unless I actually touch hands with him. Which is pretty much what I would say about any martial artist without actually having met them in person.

I agree Sammy, I don't like passing judgement either, but I don't realistically see him doing what hes doing to them, to anyone.. I was speaking to fu pau really.
