Fortunately, I've never been attacked while randomly passing through a ring or they might have given me a penalty or something. I'm not rich/famous/Kafkaesque enough to have paparazzi or an entourage or even annoying fat kids with cell phone cameras following me around to capture any random encounters.
Can't say I've ever been randomly attacked by someone with high-level MMA or BJJ skills, either. Drunken fools who think they do, yes, but never the real thing. Sigh. |

Rep Power: 15 | | | Just a roundabout way of saying that in "real" fights, your opponent won't necessarily be as skilled as someone you'd face in competition. They might be tough or crazy, but probably not someone who's very skilled. So far I've been able to handle crazy random guys fairly easily. This is from an adult male perspective, which colours my experience a little.
More seriously, videos would be appreciated. Good grappling videos are something you can't have too many of. A lot of what I've been able to find is either someone very good against someone with no clue, so anything works, or two guys who are equally matched countering each other so fast that it's hard for someone who's not a skilled grappler to see what's going on. Someone like myself will be able to tell the difference between, say, great & horrible, but not see all the levels in between. A lot of us who do internal CMA like to get in close and do standing grappling, and aren't afraid to take it to the ground on occasion, but anyone with reasonable ground skills will probably clean us good. |

If, when standing, you are maintaining a control for "any length of time", you need to have a better plan of what to do once you take control.
Standing limb control should (ideally) be transitional to keep the limb from harming you, or to disrupt structure/balance/flow while you take advantage of position/space/openings etc generated by the momentary control that you have. If "any length of time" is expended, you have usully lost the initiative, making the control redundant.

Needless to say it is impossible to "control" an arm without grappling... It can be redirected, but not controlled.
In grappling range (standing) there are overhooks (whizzers) and underhooks that can be used to control arms. There are also arm-drags and cross grips. I seldom ever use simple wrist control unless setting up something more reliable, i.e. arm drags...
From bottom position on the ground (guard) I will use the arm crush (shoulder lock-down, which is THE best arm control position ever) for most everything and the setups that follow but will sometimes use underhooks and whizzers to set up sweeps. If I am looking for an armbar I will use the cross grip and if I am looking for a hammerlock I will use the figure four lock. There is also the "rack" arm control where you get wrist control and put your knee/shin in the bend of the opponent's elbow. You push away with your shin while pulling on the wrist, basically stretching out the opponent's forearm and digging into his biceps muscle.
If I am on top trying to set up arm locks I will use the figure four for bent arm locks and to simply control the limb I will use the elbow-to-elbow intertwined method (mostly to set up armbars).
That being said, getting control and a lock on an arm against someone who has no clue of chin na (if you are adept at all the control positions above) can be done "in an instant"... But if you don't have working knowledge of the above positions and the opponent has the slightest clue of chin na skills, then "an instant" can become a very, very long time.... | ”
Well said.

Every time I do a vid like this I notice how much detail is left out. I try to keep the vids short to reduce downloading time... It makes me want to go ahead and do the complete instructional series. I hate doing things and only being able to give a brief synopsis of detail.......
I could do a 30 minute video just on the armcrush shoulder lockdown and the setups by itself.

Cool thanks
Haven't had a chance to look at it yet, will do so later today.
It might be an idea to do some teaching vids as a way for further highlights of your club, yourself and skills and as a way to make money, I know I'd be interested in something like that
