In what? If its a training cert in BJJ than he will be a great instructor for you in that. If its Kung Fu than he will in that, though if he is getting it in the so call tiger claw then I would run. Since you said he only trained that style for a few months.

Ah yes, certification. It's a word that works a lot like a "guarantee." If you ever saw the movie Tommy Boy, you know what Tommy had to say about a guarantee:

Most people are very surprised when I tell them that CMA are not governed by some super organization, and that most "certificates" aren't really as amazing as they sound. I really opened the eyes of the director of the rec center where I teach. Apparently the Karate guy had all sorts of "official" certificates (I know the guy as well and its definitely pretty shameless). I informed her that the majority of those certificates and any certificates she sees will only count within the immediate organization.

CMA are just to diverse, secretive, and political to get their act together and have an umbrella organization. The few bigger organizations I have seen are more concerned about money than qualifications when it comes to certifying people.
