SifuJames is an unknown quantity at this point
My personal opinion is that there are various levels of self teaching.
There are those who have had good instruction for a few years, know most of the basics and then continue to refine their skills.
There are then those who have some sort of training aid, such as videos, books etc.
Then comes those people who devote themselves to their training whole heartedly, spending many years trying to master a style.
Then there is the guy who watched Enter The Dragon once and believed he was the reincarnation of Bruce Lee.

I do have a lot of respect for those who devote lots of their time to teaching themselves, and I have seen quite a few self taught people who do have some rather impressive skills. I have also seen some people that have had instruction for years, and cannot even do the most basic of techniques properly. A person who has practised by themselves could by all means accomplish as much as a trained martial artist. It would just take longer. After all, the great masters who invented the traditional styles had nobody to teach them but nature.

There are some other variations.

You get people who have trained something else to a very high level and thoroughly understand their body, the mechanics of movement, and an integrated philosophy. Some of these people can watch a video or demo, replicate the movement the first time, and improve on it the second, without ever having done any MA training. If people like that were to decide to teach themselves an MA and found themselves enough sparring partners they might very well reach a good level of skill.
