Thanks Brian! I watched videos from this site where he did some coconut breaking. So now I have observed it.
I find it interesting to learn who is out there in the San Diego MA community. There are a lot of MA schools here and I know only of a few of them.
BTW, on another thread you had a picture of you doing CLF. Who did you study CLF from? Did you study that while in San Diego? If so, is it someone who still teaches in San Diego? Of course I am particularly interested in the history of CLF here and it is interesting to find someone who knows the history that far back.

It's all good oldguy
If you have looked at that site since though, you can see an obviously poor demonstration and understanding of his stance work, mechanics, principles and idea behind power distribution. It's quite poor all around. |

Isn't that why they invented those machettes with the husking spike on the back?

These? Made for sugar-cane, but you can with one stroke cut off the base/point of the nut, and with 3 carefully placed cuts to the top open it, leaving you with a big mug with a lid and a stable base. Saw a guy do these about once every 5 sec. and just hand 'em out as drinks to everyone at the table, awesome.
Put the blade of a pick-axe in the ground and use the point while standing on the handle if you want to husk 'em, takes moments.

As for iron palm training, a true internal iron palm practitionar can break coconuts or hard stones from 2 inch distance. I believe this kind of training has more deep value on making a person healthier.
Every system has this kind of training. |

No, more a traditional bush knife shape but with a similar spike (sometimes with a crossbar) on the back near the tip behind a kind of rounded top used for scraping. The idea was to tear up the husk with the spike and then use it to punch in the "eyes" so you could drink the juice through them. Then you could split it, rig the knife as a scraper by kneeling on a stool, and get the meat out. I saw them in the carribean (in a museum) as well as back home so they're not just a remote south pacific thing.

Rep Power: 54 | | | Hmmm, never seen one of those, sounds cool though. Thought you might have something else in mind. What is cool about the above technique is you can use the "lid" as a scraper.

Rep Power: 157 | | | Sounds like an impressive party trick. I always ended up using a hatchet; not elegant but got the job done. I haven't been much for coconuts since I was 4 or 5 and we hitched a ride on a copra boat for a couple of days; that smell is enough to put you off for life.
