I am sorry, I spaced out and did not answer your question about the Choy Li Fut in San Diego. I learned Choy Li Fut over a number of years, running about 1976 to 79 or so. I learned from a guy named Dirk Johnson who had studied in Hawaii from Bucksam Kong. We trained at the Ching Yi Kung Fu Academy on University Ave. Mike Brown was the owner and head instructor although the Hung Gar and Choy Li Fut program was taught by Dirk and Dirk kind of rented the space from Mike.
We worked on Sui Mui (Plum Blossom fist), both the solo hand set and the two man version. Sui Mui was an outstanding training routine. Really seemed to have a lot of the good things of Choy Li Fut. The two man set was a great demo set too. Neither the Siu Mui solo set or the two man were not super long (by Hung Gar/Choy Li Fut standards) but you were plenty “gassed” by the time you got thought them.
Dirk also taught the Choy Li Fut butterfly knives and a spear set. Both of which were great too. As to where Bucksam Kong got the Choy Li Fut material, that was always a little murky. It kind of came out later that Buck got the material from Lee Hoon Koon. In any event, it was great stuff.
Because of its dramatic long armed movements, Choy Li Fut was really considered a big deal back then. I remember the first time I saw Dirk do Siu Mui I could not believe it. Dirk was skilled and that was a great set.
Take care and sorry for spacing out and delaying the reply. Oh, and for who is still teaching Choy Li Fut in San Diego, I am pretty sure by now Dirk is long retired from teaching southern Shaolin (be it Choy or Hung). I have not seen him in 25 years probably.

Sorry, as a westerner & a Habs fan, it's my sacred duty to be loyal to Robin's. Tim played for the Bay Maple Leafs. Besides, nobody's ever lost a job over Robin's Eggs.
Actually, I didn't mind the postures in the first link too much. Where he lost me was with the no mention of the style & the glowing testamonials. |

Rep Power: 220 | | | You have no idea.
First came across it doing a Cabinetry job and thought how great it is, it's expensive but when you take the properties of Bamboo, add strong resins to it, you get a tough/flexible block that slices the heck out of you if you make a mistake.
It's a good learning lesson and training tool. |
