We do gi training occasionally and when we do we wear standard BJJ type gis. Other than that it's just grappling board shorts and rash guards for the most part. Heavy canvas gis (karate style) aren't very good for grappling as they are really rough and abrasive.

I noticed that too when I got my first grappling gi. They're so much softer than the gis I used in Hapkido and Bujinkan. I was actually very surprised about that, and how thick the collar is in comparison.

Thanks. I think I'll invest in a good gi and some underarmour. Then I'll try to find a BJJ school or any other school that even offers at least some grappling in their curriculum.
