It's always good that you're fighting other cats from different systems though. You can learn quite a bit from doing that. See how they differ, what they do better/worse, how to defend/attack against a different fighting philosophy and methodology.
Make yourself a more complete fighter.

Rep Power: 40 | | | Keep training with the guy whenever you can, Ben. When you can handle his attacks, you should be able to handle most strikers.

Rep Power: 21 | | | Well, that guy and I promised to train at least once a month, until I can handle more of what he has to offer. Then we will increase the number and duration of the sparring sessions. Can't wait. I got flogged but it was a great learning experience. I'm tingling with excitement just waiting for the next time. |

That's kind of backwards logic... The more you train with him and learn what he has to show you the quicker you will be able to "handle what he has to offer".

Rep Power: 21 | | | I know, but well in China, they do everything differently here. It's crazy, but everything has to be down so damn slow sometimes. I'd rather train with him more and take what works for me and incorporate it into my own style. But he wants to wait. |

Rep Power: 21 | | | Cam, I took your advice. Start sparring him more and more. I think I've got his timing down now, but still hits like a ton of bricks. Especially his leg kicks. |

Rep Power: 7 | | | As I told everyone in our FB group, the meet was a total unqualified success! Everyone took and gave some pretty hard hits, but no one got crippled or horribly injured (I think I have a black eye among other fun stuff), no one got angry at being hit, no one's egos flared up, and basically it was all around fun! We weren't all killing each other the entire time, there was other training too. We went from bare knuckle to gloves and everything in between.
Some fun moments: Miluo elbowing me in the face during push hands. Ow!! Getting punched in the eye by Josh. Eating face shot after face shot from a 280 pound guy during boxing rules and gloves. Fun times.
I can't wait for the next time! We all have things to work on, of course, I know I do.
Banditshaw: we're eagerly awaiting the Hung Gar knowledge you have to impart. I would like to encourage people to do stuff like this everywhere.
I guess we were lucky that we all got along so well. Real lucky. I've sparred with people who did not like getting hit or who started getting wild and crazy the second they take a shot. Nothing like that here. Massive props to Miluo for getting this thing started and to Josh for providing us a place to kill each other, I mean spar, and for providing a lot of knowledge and expertise.
I would like to thank everyone involved for not gouging me in the eyes, punching me in the throat or ripping my skin. Also, thanks for all the fun times, and I can't wait for the next! All are invited to participate. I hope to be fighting with some Bullshido guys next Saturday, and if they're up for it, I'll try to bring them too.
Results: Awesome! Thanks, everyone! |

Rep Power: 29 | | We'll take some for sure next time.
The push hands one was funny. I was basically uprooted and fell forward, and I did a cutting elbow on accident, which hit Keith in the head. Ouch!
Other moments - me showing Keith and Josh one of our grab escapes, which includes a reverse stomp kick from the back foot to the opponent's knees/shins, while simultaneous smashing his forearms with a kum jong (palm strike) and torquing the hands/waist away to upset his center. Anyways, Keith managed to actually kick my knees in with just a tiny bit of force, and it still pushed them in a bit. Proved that stomp kicks to the needs would actually cause major damage and are not just BS techniques.
We also did quite a bit of boxing training, we did some Chi Sau, but while maintaining the Wing Chun core movement we applied Choy Lay Fut techniques, parries, strikes, etc. Also a lot of strength training with medicine balls, a lot of padwork and drills.
Overall it was an awesome day. Ate some tasty chili dogs for lunch and watched videos of Yellow Bamboo, while discussing the techniques of Ashida Kim and Doo Wai.
Today was a good day.

Rep Power: 21 | | | Ashida Kim.... I haven't heard that name in a long time, LOL. I think I have one of his books somewhere in PDF format on a CD. What a joke. | |
