Rep Power: 0 | | | I need advice I have done some training before. I want to get back into it.
My town is really lame when it comes to schools.
The only two schools that interest me are a Taekwondo school
and an Aikido school.
I'm torn in regards to which I should take up. As I really want to commit to the one i practice and get a good skill level, which makes me think what I will be commiting to.
I'm not interested in hurting people and I certainly wont fight if I don't have to. I know myself pretty well at this time in my life and I can't see myself getting involved in a violent situation. I don't go out to dangerous places with idiots drunk or on drugs or just wanting to hurt people, young or old alike..
I guess what I am saying is I am doing this for fitness, confidence and to have fun while learning something that may be somewhat usefull if I have to defend myself - I do wish to become somewhat of a well rounded martial artist eventually, if it goes that far, but my main priority for my training right now is that which i mentioned previously.
So... anyway, I may be going to university next year in which case I will be moving to Melbourne and there is a large variety of almost any school you could imagine. But for the time being it's Aikido or Taekwondo.
How do I decide what school to choose ? I have seen both schools and they have good teachers and the classes look fun. |

Seriously....go to the school with the best recommendations. Watch a couple classes before you decide. Maybe you'd prefer a class with all dudes or no kids or whatever makes you attend.

Rep Power: 0 | | First off, what are you looking to get out of your Martial Arts class? Self Defense, Physical Fitness, Practicality, Tradition and History, A place to socialize, etc etc etc?
Not all Martial Arts are equal in those terms, some are better than others and some are bad on all levels | “ | Originally

Rep Power: 0 | | | Ok... well, not the most helpful responses but I do appreciate you taking the time to respond.
I know what the styles consist of, roughly, considering I haven't practiced them..
I have visited both places and spoke to their instructors, both seem like good schools, especially taking into account that they are the only ones which appeal to me.
If you read my initial post you would see what I wanted to get out of my practice.
I guess you were just touching up on some factors which you may think are of importance in my decision. Thanks.
I think I'm going to go with the Taekwondo anyway.. |

Rep Power: 100 | | | Your physical attributes may have some reflection on which of these two arts would be suitable. If you're a big fella you may find all the tippy-tappy jumping in the air stuff they do in TKD just isn't practical.
I like Aikido if only because it is complete in the sense of a ethos. |

Rep Power: 168 | | | I think aikido is right up at the top of my list of World's Most Useless Martial Arts.... a system devised solely to defend against the deadly attack of the hand shake.

Rep Power: 29 | | | Have to agree with Cam. Aikidou is a watered down spin-off of Aikijujutsu. Aikidou is good in a spiritual sense, but today's watered down version probably wouldn't stop a 200 pound attacker trying to rip your head off. But if you wanted to get back into shape, Aikidou is less demanding than Taekwondo. But maybe it's the place to start. |

Rep Power: 59 | | | In today's internet bashing prone world, you could probably not have chosen two arts to compare that have a less favorable public opinion than the two you listed. That is probably why there were so few responses, no one wants to sound too negative..
That is not to say you will not find value in the classes, but you will have to decide that for yourself anyhow...

Rep Power: 8 | | | I would suggest going to a gym and lifting weights and doing cardio.
That way, you get fitness, and if you get all buffed out, no one will dare mess with you, and if they do, you can just squeeze their heads. If that fails, you can run. That's where the cardio comes in.
In your situation, you won't be put in very dangerous situations where you can't get out either by squeezing someone's head or running, so no need to do something that isn't optimal for fitness.
There are lots of workouts out there. Play with them. Pick something you like doing. Then, as Nike says, Do It!
Good luck! |

Why do people dislike these styles ?
I guess I can understand the scepticism to some extent. I would be more so that way inclined towards Aikido than Taekwondo.
However, I am not looking to be the best fighter in the world.
The stuff I have seen some Taekwondo guys do looks fine to me ?
Am I missing something ? Punching and Kicking is usually something you do in a fight.. ?
Theres really no other schools, and I want to study some MA's not go to the gym all the time :P no offense towards your idea ofcourse. | |
