Calling all martial arts

Please can you help?

I am currently in negotiation with a publisher over two martial arts books. The first book Get Started in Martial Arts is a step by step guide to finding the right art for you. The second book Get More from Your Martial Art is a guide to getting more from your training.

As a key principle of the books is that all martial arts have something to offer I would like to include photos of as wide a range of arts as possible - from Viking wrestling to Masi stick fighting. Do you have any photos that I could include ? I would not be able to pay for them but any photo used would receive an acknowledgement stating the club and website address of the contributor.

If you think you might be able to help please PM me.

PS – All the best to you other writers out there, it’s a long slog but in the end you will get there and it feels great !!

Thanks very much guys.

Also can anyone suggest arts that should be included? I am practically interested in having as broad a mix of arts as possible. Esoteric as well as mainstream and not just the usual suspects. Viking wrestling is a good example it uses many traditional wrestling techniques with the addition of a large rock in the middle of the arena called a murder stone. The idea is to smash your opponents head against the rock.

All thoughts gratefully received.

Tom

Hi Tom, Congrats on getting the ear of a publisher!

I don't have any photos that would be worth posting (unless you like seeing crappy kung fu) but you could contact Wah Lum Temple directly. The worst they could say is no.

Tom Bayley,

Just a little tid bit of information in case your publisher hasn't already discussed it with you. Make sure to get a disclaimer contract signed by each person in the pics releashing you and the company that way it'll protect from falsely accused legal actions.

There have been legal issues with these problems before so some helpful info for ya.

Thank you for pointing that out. Yes, everything will have to be rights checked eventually but for now I am interested in suggestions for which arts to include and leads for finding photos.

If anyone could has suggestions for clubs/organisations that I could approach or the names of people who deal with press/publicity for different clubs. That would also be a big help.

Suggestions for Japanese and /or non-Asian arts would be particualy appreciated as I am weak in these areas.

Cheers

Tom

African Nguni Stickfighting comes to mind.

Might want to look into various bladed/weapon oriented systems as well.

You could even go as far as to include criminal elements - e.g. prison-derived systems and methods used by gangs/murderers/rapists/etc.

Maybe fencing. Greco Roman wrestling. Savate. Just to name a few. But I agree with CLF Devil. Adding prison/gang systems would add an element of interest to the book.

That's a good point, there are thousands of fighting styles. And in each of styles, each stylist has his or her own style of movement.

Impossible to cover them all in depth in one book. Maybe you should try to find a common theme. Like how different cultures, media and politics have influenced and shaped MA differently around the world.
