Running away is not a bad solution in general. Often, people who just do a cheap bullying in a pub don't run after you a long way. Just sometimes it will trigger that "hunting instinct", and people, especially more than one, will run wildly to get you, and you also will be in a place with NOONE around to witness. Witnesses is often what will save you from being humiliated by chance, from excitement. Bullets yet build another problem. In a pub, you will not get shot so easily, since this is not Chicago 1930. In a void area, I do not bet on it. I also have the policy of fighting if I cannot cool down the situation, if it is desperate. People often end up in a lonely position with people having all time to plan everything, and most often, it goes like the victim seeing it coming freezing. In germany, it is unlikely to be killed if you have arguments with some folks in a pub, unless you mess with criminals. Most murders happen in some lone place, from teenagers massacring another, or a rape type of crime ending with witness disposal. I freak out hearing of some four 60 kilos teenager torturing another for his HAIRCUT, and then drowning him in a cesspit. It often doesn't matter how you fight as long AS you fight, doing everything you can. Those are most, most often not some war proven all out super fighter but stupids that do it because noone STOPS them doing, and the crime victim trying desperate driven to argue with not getting raged. This is a most troublesome stuff to think of, at least for me. I don't await those UFC type perfect machines to wait for me around the corner, it's Joey waiting for a cheap victim. |

If I have to throw a few strikes (or a lot) before I get that opportunity I will, but running is always going to be one of the foremost things on my mind, whether I'm grappling or not. I just don't expect that in most situations I'll have to do anything other than run to get away. | ” | |
Yep, that's the essence of self-defense, avoid when you can and when you're in the conflict, create the distance to escape. All it takes is a push, heel-palm to the face, or a swift kick to the knee to create enough distance to flee. Strike, back away to make sure he's far enough away and bam, knees in the air you're outta there. To me, it's always better to flee than fight. Time is always against you.
People that attack others don't do so because they want to see how good a fighter that person is. They pick their victims so that in their eyes they are guaranteed to win. In that case, I always assume the guy is bigger and stronger than me and I don't want to go toe-to-toe with someone like that.
By the way, too, guns don't change the equation. According to Sanford Strong (an ex-LA policeman who wrote "Strong on Defense") police estimate that at (if I remember correctly) 3 meters, gunman have a 25% chance of even hitting their target, let alone causing enough damage to seriously hurt you. In essence, that means you have better odds altogether if you flee at all costs after you make sure you've created the distance (which is only about 6 feet).

Rep Power: 0 | | | Well, in the off chance that I would end up in a pub, I'd run as far as the bouncer and make it really obvious that I don't want to fight. As for running to a lone place, it's not very often that I can't run in fairly short order to somewhere that I can get help. That just happens to be the situation I'm in, and I admit it probably won't work for everyone. It's just after I got past the stage of wanting to prove myself I haven't run into any problems. |

Rep Power: 10 | | | I keep hearing stuff like "what if you were a bouncer", listen you need both as a door man, and baby sitting drunks is about one of the worst jobs you'll ever have. And I was always a beer and cheese kinda guy myself there Tai. |

Rep Power: 81 | | | I was a bouncer and I needed to be able to use both, its really a silly question.
Anytime you touch someone for longer than it takes to strike, its a form of grappling.
