Sumo Application

Ok....how EXACTLY does sumo wrestling 'work'

are there kicks, punches, and holds (like arm bars, etc.)....or just trying to crush your opponent

are there katas for Sumo wrestling

but mostly...how (if at all) is Sumo Wrestling applyed to real life situations
or is it more of a tournament/competition based 'sport'

TIA!

No strikes allowed except palm strikes. If someone gets throw down or pushed outside the circle they lose. They have many throws...much like a big guys judo. In fact..."kubi nage" is a judo throw that comes from sumo.
There are armbars to the extent they would help standing. No groundfighting...it is a sport, but like others can/is used outside of the ring sometimes.

The only sumo fighter I ever seen was the first UFC fight, and it didn't go too well for him.

The only real problem with sumo is that it is trained from the get go as a sport. And the idea is really just to knock your opponent down or out of the ring. Size is the deciding factor for the majority of the time, but so is leverage and technique/skill.

As far as a fighting style though, that really depends on the particular practitioner and how much they put into combat related applications.

Sumo is more of a traditional sport than an MA style. It has a lot of prestidge umong the whole community. It was never developed for reasons of self defense or combat, it was developed as a way of demonstrating power, of type like said earlier in the thread, almost always comes with size, but leverage and technique can offset that. So mostly, it is just an ancient prestidge sport

Actually, the ancient origins of sumo include the art of Sumai , which was a much more 'free-fighting' nhb-type of thing.

ya...size can be a factor....but i've seen some fights were on guy that 200 lbs less than the other guy can just get him going in one direction, then get out of the way....the bigger guy just can't stop himself and goes falling flat on his face, or out of the ring..........

i also think that sumo would be a great idea for (american) football players!!!...it's the same basic tactics....push the other guy down....lol
