So I came across a guys I have known for a while. Hes a sell out kempo Guy who has had the school there since I was a kid.
Anyway we were talkoingn about how we train and he was trying to be all inds of high and mighty about the spiritual journey of the arts and not training to fight.
ok sO I said I understand the whole learn to fight so you dont have to theory but that implies you actually do the (learn to fight) part.
He told me he had never been in a fight because he was so heavily into the nature of the arts he has always been able to manuever ouit of confrontation.
At this point I was a little steamed at his ignorance. Because quite simply not everyone lives in little crappy Webster massachusetts. The rest of us are out there in the real world with real chances of running into real baddies. Try talking your way out of a knifeing when four wannabe gang members have blood into a gang.
So unrealistic it was sickening. Many of my students have never and probably will never have to fight, God bless'em. Still I am going to make sure that if they have to they can. Not bet on it never happening.
So anyway I told him If he ever wanted to really train to come down to my school and we'll see where his talk will get him.
And I left.

having the ability to fight does a few things
It gives you the confidence that if you have to you can
It makes you aware of what can happen so if you can help it you won't make foolish mistakes and take chances (after all you may be better but a lucky punch can injure you for life)
The fight to not fight or however you say it is meant to mean fight the self as well beat the flaws beat the fears beat the controlling issues you have in order to master yourself
Through the idea of conflict the value of non-conflict becomes clearer there is an elevation of the self from primordial conflict to higher levels.
Conflict itself is in every aspect of life as it is in every aspect of every thought, there are patterns and universal laws that apply across the board and martial arts is a means to discover that higher understanding.
I agree many people just don't get what the statement means.
Knowing is the yin yang of understanding and experience
