The reason I'm posting this is because one of my Chinese martial arts teachers is teaching an event in the East Bay near Berkeley, CA, on the topic of Ba Gua Meditation.
Ba Gua is a martial art designed for people who are already experts in one style. Using the Circle Walking practice, a person might be able to enhance their ability in the art they already practice. Because Aikido and Ba Gua share so many similarities, I believe that an Aikidoist could use Ba Gua to add something special to their art.
For me, the Circle Walking contained so many elements that deepened my throwing and two person skills. The mindfulness and energy work elements involved in the Ba Gua Meditation practice really helped me make the chi/ki come alive in my body, and helped my mind enter a state of calm that I had never before reached.
For example, one time I was sparring a Wing Chun guy, and we were tangling at very high speeds. By the time the dust cleared I found myself throwing him in a picture perfect Kaiten Nage! WOW! We were both surprised because he hardly felt it happen, and I didn't even know I was doing it!
The calmness and use of continuous spiraling footwork, as well as other factors, that I had learned in Ba Gua really gave me an edge that I didn't have before. I've felt much more able to utilize my Aikido skills in freestyle practice since working on Ba Gua Circle Walking.
