Intestinal Ulcers?

I'm not shure how many of you practice TCM, but for those that do what is a good remedy for intestinal pain I have been missing alot of class latley do to this problem and I need to find something to help me deal with the pain without paying out lots of money to a western doctor I can't afford or any surgery that will take me away from class longer. My Sifu suggest Shou Wu (he said it was like a potato), has anyone heard of this before Also, what are some good sorces online to order fresh chinese herbs from

I would immediately go and look for an EXPERIENCED TCM doctor, who does not just try one or another, but has a methodology to look for the cause and cure this.

Otherwise, go immediately and visit a western clinic to see if this is a serious thing, because it can be too many things, from very serious to not so serious ones. It would for example be very bad if you miss a damage to internal organs from a stomache hit or kick. If it is a serious ake at a certain place, and not a more general one, go for a doctor and lets have a look at an x-ray photo.

Well the thing is I went to my regular doctor and he gave me a prescription for previcid. I told him I believed that I needed to be checked for ulcers but he said give it some time and see what the medicine does. Its been a few months now though and no real relief. Maybe I should find another doctor.

Definetly. My grandfather died this year from uncared ulcer leading to massive bleeding, he would have been easy to cure with antacida, and antibiotica. If it lasts that long, go to another doctor, a good specialist for gastrology/enterology, or an internist.
Often, a simple large public clinic is also good in diagnostics, because they deal with a large variety of people having all sorts of illnesses. There is usually a good chance that the doctors of such a clinic already stumbled over your problem in another case and deal with it on behalf of their experience. Hopefully, so keep your mind open.

For the "home care", look at your habits for eating, drinking, resting, work-out, and see the extremes in your habits. Often, extremes lead to imbalances of the organism, say, drinking a whole litre of grapefruit juice all day, or large amounts of milk, etc.
Eat more vegetables. A diet with the local pizzeria might cure you .

Go to your local pharmacy, and ask them for some normal house recipies, say, simple teas, no expensive special instant things.

If you have a china town, go there and ask some people where they go.

Thanks for the help Nik. I think I might just try to make an appointment with a specialist. I'd hate to have any permanent damage that cold ruin my martial arts carreer.

Anyway, how are you feeling

If your still having problems, did you see a few doctors yet What's the prognosis

Tell me, when do you wake up,

What do you have for break fast and when

Lunch and when

Dinner and when

What's your pre practice meal like, and how long before training do you eat it

What's you training like, are you using any herbal formulas from your school What about training teas for energy enhancement

How many hours, and what do you do I know you put alot of hours in, but is it all at once do you split it into a morning, noon and evening scedual Do you scedual recovery time in to your training

How old are you

What are the conditions that initiated the symptoms

The Shou Wu had helped me tremendously in the past week. I haven't had any pain and digestion is ten times better.I talked with a good friend of mine who does Chinese Medicine in the area and he told me that it was a good herb to use as well.

I wake up every morning at 5 am to take my girlfriend to work, I get home about 6 and sleep until seven . Then I get up and go to train.

I eat Bacon egg and cheese biscuit from McDonalds allmost every morin because thats where my girl works and its free because I dont have much money to buy food after paying for school, car, rent, and all that good stuff.

Lunch is usually a hotdog when I get to work about 4 pm. If not a hotdog I eat a sandwhich at the house.

Sometimes I don't eat dinner at all. If I do its sometimes leftover hotdogs from work or a burger from somewhere if I have extra cash. If not then its a sandwhich from home.

My prepractice meal is the breakfast at 5 am. I start training about 8 at home and then I leave at 8:45 to get to school at nine where I stay until between 2-3 pm. This is everyday except for weekeds. On the weekends I come home and do Yi Chin Jings, Chi Gungs, and things like that after work.

I don't use any training teas or anyhing like that when I train. Except for Dit Da Jow. My training is pretty tough and is usually between 5-6 hours non-stop, then I go into work at 4pm and work until 11pm (convienient store).

I'm 20 on the 27th.

The conditions that initiated the symptoms I would rather talk about in private because its not something I want the world to know about.

I also sometimes get a pack of crackers or something during the workout. We usually take 1 or 2 five minute breaksand you get really hungry after doing horse for a long time. I drink gatorade and apple juice during workouts and I stay away from sugar until Im done working out as well. I know my diets bad but I have so many bills I can't afford ro run out and "eat right", I have to eat what I can afford.

Oh MY GOD!!!!! I almost got sick just reading this!!!

First, if you are traing as much as you say, (and from what "I" hear it's most likely you are) you NEED to eat like an atlete, rightnow you eat lke a couch potato!!!

FIRST, in order to maintain any atlectic persuit you need Carbo-hydrates. This is the fuel your body runs on. It is found in fruites and vegitables (best source).


Second, you NEED protines to build and rebuild the body. Most commn are found in meats, but beans Toufu are good sources.

A Mc anything IS NOT FOOD!!! I will repeat IT IS NOT FOOD!!!

In the morning, it is best to load up on carbohydrates such as apples, Bannabas, cantalope or any other fruit you like enough to eat LOTS of. I generally add carrots (Iknow Yuc) or grapes to my meal. This will not only carbo load you for your work out, but it will fill you with lots of other nutrients as well. Your Body NEEDS it's nutrients to be healthy and function properly. Herbs are not a good substitue. FIRST fix the diet, then worry about herbs.

For lunch i often eat raw, (but slightly warmed) veggies like corn. peas, beans carrot slices etc mixed with rice and some sort of meat like beef (organicaly produce if possible) Chicken, left over Duck around the holidays, fish. I love this Tarriaki Sauce from a local familiy owned grocery around here, so I ususally add that for tast. This is a diet PACKED with all the vital nutirents the hard training body NEEDS!!!.

For dinner I'm usualy meat heavy for the protine. I figure it wil be used for body building while I sleep. I ALWAYS have a 4th meal 2 hours befor I train, usually a bowl of veggitable soup, home made and thick like good meal. This is extra importan for athletes as wee have a MUCH (i repeat) MUCH higher nutirtional need than normal people.

Your diet alone can easily explian your problem.

Also, how much water do you drink a "normal" body need 64 fluid ounces (2 gatoraid bottles) a day. If you aer training hard , you need more, if your on some sort of olympic level training (like you do), you need even more still, and probually one more mini meal right afetr you train.

When I used to put in a scedual like yours, I also used bee pollen and Royal Jelly for it's extra nutritional boost over regular food. It has THOUSANDS of added nutrients, and blows and over the counter vitmine pill out of the water. You can actually feel the power during practice, and it has no known side effects.


Remember, to be healthy you NEED to

Move, breathe AND EAT RIGHT.

Now, make sure you get the doctors opinion on your condition in addition to the dietary changes.

Thanks for the input. As I typed that post last night the reason became obvious. Even my family doctor said I needed to eat better but I have an extremely hard head, Sifu tells me I need to eat better too. Now what I need is to work out a good plan for myself containing the foods I like.... which aren't many

It is actually cheaper to buy the ingredients (eggs bacon & English Muffin) to make your own breakfast sandwiches (which would actually contain real food) Than it is to buy them every morning, you should take a little extra time and cook! Plus going to the grocery store is cheap if you get the right foods.
However, if you say this problem has been for 4 or 5 years it seems to me it is a little more involved than your diet, especially if you are only 20 years old! A 20 year old can usually live on cardboard. Although you should change your diet, I don't think you can excuse this problem you are having as diet related, it sounds more serious to me. I really think you should get more medical advice.

You are correct. Monkey Fist needs the attention of a real doctor. Before using herbs or other treatments, he needs to know exactly what is wrong with him.

Also, eating right is VERY important. Just because your 20 does not mean you can live off of card board, although i'm sure many of us did, including me (Well, Pasta, Pizza etc anyway). The thing is, at that age diet is STILL extremely important, especially if your in a full time 6-8 hour a day program like Monkey Fist is in.

My daughter is 11, and trains in an olympic level gym 4 hours a day 4 days a week. If not for a perfect diet, she would NOT EVEN QUALIFY against her competitors let alone take the Bronze she took at state last year.

Also, Monkey fist explained somewhere he is traininng this scedual after only 9 months of study, so over training is a definate concern, unless he was extremely athletic prior to his study.

Anything less than a perfect diet under theses conditions is not only wasting your training, but asking for all sorts of health problems. Especially jiont and connective tissue, as they DONOT have the nutritional support nessasary to handle the load they are being put under day in and day out.

Eating as he described and holding the training scedual he has mentioned in other posts is almost ensuring a short live MA career.

Two biggest klllers of a Martial artist:

Poor Diet and long term over training injuries.

Dearey me! First time on these boards and I see that two of the moderators have had health problems.

As I think a few people have mentioned, the diet thing is not exactly helping. How long has this been your preferred style of eating - rushing around and not having proper time for a meal, and eating grease by any other name It is important to give the meal some time of its own - so you don't feel rushed. We've all had indigestion after golping down a mel as we were late.

It is likely (Note: I am not a trained TCM therapist of any type - just an interested party), that the oil in the food, together with the style of eating have led to a build up of phlegm and yin deficiency in the Stomach and Spleen, maybe some heat as well. One test is to look at your tongue in the mirror - if it seems to have a thick sticky coating on it this indicates the presence of phlegm.

So - even if true - where do you go from here. Number one, change that obscene diet. Number two, keep you calorie intake comnensurate with your activity pattern - in your case that means eat lots. Number three, keep to regular meals and allow time for them. Number four, try to be a little less rushing around - which is increasing the amount of stomach acid in you and hardly helping the problem. Number five - go and see someone professionaly (a friend who recommends just ain't good enough. Neither is this post).

Incidentally - the herb Shou Wu here's some info: current research has found it to be effective in reducing cholesterol levels, doubtless due to the lecithin found in the root. Also used for lower back pain, insomnia, premature hair loss and graying, diabetes and hypo-glycemia. It also strengthens muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. He Shou Wu is the favorite tonic of China. Current research has shown He Shu Wu to not only lower blood cholesterol and help prevent the retention of fats in the blood stream but it may also "prevent the penetration of fats in the arterial lining..." theoretically reducing arteriosclerosis.
