this can't be said often enough. It needs to be qualified supervision too, qualified to know what to do if it turns out the student's body wasn't up to it after all...
There are different ways to do the training but probably the most common are iron palm and iron shirt. My teacher has given me the details of his training and it is a huge comitment - starting with breathing and stance exercises at set times of the day a set number of times a day, building up to 100 days of specific exercises combined with herbs and abstinence (from everything pleasurable, as near as I can see). Only certain other training can be done at the same time, if you get the exercises wrong, or have a pre-existing undiagnosed weakness, or push it too hard, you can seriously f*** yourself up and you will regret it.
Of course, much of the mysticism can probably be cut out, but who's going to tell you how much of it?
If you do genuine internal training correctly for long enough you will get similar benefits at far lower risk.

I don't know too much on Chi ... I am starting to believe that the main goal of tai chi is to exagerate the use of body movements coresponding to breath, in relation with balance.
The use of body movement, placement and balance and utilizing all these components together with breath.
With the continous forms of tai chi being (seems) to have alot of body movement but also teaches balance/posture with the strikes. With this continous practicing you are really emphasizing to your mind and muscles body movement ... the great use of hips. Thus giving you more body power with your strikes, movements. Teach to never comprimise balance ie: knees on top of feet ...not passed, > head over shoulder -over hips - over knees -over feet.
The rest of the phenom about chi ... I don't know and am unsure.
I have mixed feelings on the subject ... most due to lack of knowledge about it and a little sceptism.

A large part of it is conditioning, strengthening the bones, muscles, skin, etc.
But chi is also used to reinforce those same as well as the organs, and as an added bonus of building a further shield against injury and an opponent's chi from penetrating beyond the surface contact.

Rep Power: 0 | | | Cultivating Chi while imagining certain colors. Colors play a big part on the spectrum of what one can do with internal energy. Chi is energy and energy can be manifested by the use of particular colors to do differnt things. This has been proven with the uses of lasers and medical equipment around the world. See, a good topic!
