Rep Power: 29 | | | Basic Chi Gong Exercises? Hello everyone, as you all know I am pretty much an "external" martial artist, I enjoy it very much and don't really feel like changing.
However I have never been taught any serious Chi Gong exercises, and I am wondering if there is basic stuff I can do on my own and learn on my own, just to promote health and stuff (like "chi circulation"??? I don't know how to put it).
Just to help me relax, concentrate, better health, etc. But if it helps my fighting then yay, even better.
Thanks
Regards,
Miluo

Rep Power: 41 | | Interesting you should ask this.
I was pondering the same thing just the other day.
Albeit my reasoning is different, I want to improve my "iron style" recovery time and output.
I too know virtually nothing about Qi Gong or Chi Gung, it's all chinese to me

Rep Power: 29 | | | I would assume that all your Iron Training IS directly related to Chi Gong? Are you saying your doing Iron Training without and Chi Gong?

Rep Power: 41 | | | hhahahah Sorry, "Heavy Iron Style" is heavy ballistic weight training.
Since the birth of my daughter it's the only "style" I've been able to practice.
So, nope, it has zero relation to Iron "Palm, xyz, etc" training.
I can see where one could make that assumption though.

Relatively easy and extremely beneficial. PlumPub has a good DVD for it

Yep, it's basically a low level beginner's set, has alot of benefits for health, energy, mind.
But to get a thorough understanding of all principles involved, research it some and see what the theories are, it is not difficult to learn/perform though so you should be good.

Rep Power: 29 | | | What about learning some Taiji, Xing Yi, or Ba Gua forms? Would that totally screw up my CLF skills?
Again, I am NOT looking for Qi Gong/Internal stuff to benefit my CLF - if it does, that would be a most welcomed side effect.
This is purely for health and stuff. I know many people learn an IMA alongside their normal system - again I have no intention of being a Taiji fighter or anything or even remotely related.

Rep Power: 108 | | There are 2 ways you can look at Qigong practice.
The first way to look at it is how most people do...and that is interpretting Qigong to be some sort of mystic practice. If you believe, then you will need a skilled Instructor to teach you about the principles of Qigong as well as the actual exercises themselves. You won't be levitating from information in a book .
The other way to look at it is as a legitimate exercise, just like a push up. If you take this route, then you will also need an Instructor to teach you basic form and principles. Are you starting off trying to do a clapping push up or a head stand push up? Do you know how to progress from basic push up on? Do you know what each push up variation is meant to do? These would be same the questions to ask with regards to Qigong. | “ | This is purely for health and stuff. Then you are going to be severely limiting yourself in your Tai Chi study. Its hard to seperate the combat and keep the health benefits in there. In my opinion they go hand in hand.

Rep Power: 13 | | Learn zhuan zhang. There is not a great deal to learn externally (unlike a taiji form), and so you have to start using the mind. I would still have some lessons though - we tend to think we are standing straight when we really are not.
If I had to drop everything but one practice I woud probably keep this and let the rest go. Master Lam's is a good book, though there are lots of swooshy pictures and stuff, he is a very good source of info and lineage holder in Yi chuan. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chi-Kung-Lam.../dp/1856752151

My advice is to get a good interal arts instructor. There is much more to these arts than are easily perceived. Both hard and soft are practiced and these are combined with meditations (both moving and still) to propel your understanding of just what you are doing, why and how it all fits together as one complete aspect martial arts. |

Of course this would be great. However, being one complete aspect of martial art, as long as it DOES NOT hinder my CLF/External training, then I will gladly dive as deeply as needed. Again, I am not looking to become an internal martial artist by any means.

Miluo

Ummm . . . problems? I'm not trying to learn a new style. I just want to do some basic exercises to help with concentration, relaxation, stress relief, etc. Like how you stretch to loosen up your muscles.
