I like to think of myself as a hopeful skeptic. I can not believe that this stuff exists, but would sure love for it to. Without a doubt, I would try my best to disprove everything on the subject in order to remove all reasonable doubt that this kind of power exists.

That being said, a friend linked me the video of this John Chang guy awhile back. He had his mind blown by it, and I remained skeptical. It looked cool, but I have a skeptic’s mind and had to play Devil’s Advocate. As chance would have it, my dad has been a magician since he was in High School. I had him check out the video and he said he could replicate all of those tricks easily. In fact he said at the last magic meeting (the local chapter of the American Magician’s Association) prior to watching the video they had a discussion on a “shocking” device. Basically it can administer small volts of electricity through the fingers. However, ultimately they deemed it unsafe as they would have no idea if anyone in the audience might have a pacemaker.

My dad admitted that John Chang was good, but he didn’t see anything that any skilled magician could not do. I can’t recall if he mentioned anything about the camera angles or not.

Cool. The guy that sent this to me would be pissed if I disproved it. I like to push buttons. I want to know more....

The fire thing is somewhat easy. All he had to do was use sleight of hand (any magician worth his weight in salt practices this A LOT) to slip a magnesium strip into the newspaper. From there all it takes is a drop of sweat to ignite it.

He also told me about the Lightbulb and the Chopstick thing at the Resteraunt, but I don't recall the specifics on those.

I neve thought people could start fires or anything, but I did think things like the Shaolin monks do had to do with Chi.

My Sifu crushed that completely. He said that either our Tai-Sifu or GM (I forget which) had told him all the tricks that they use to do stuff and it wasn't about using Chi. Althous I was disappointed to hear this, I was really glad he gave me that reality check.

We do some Chi-kung in our school (not as much as I would like to) but he talked to me after that statement in a great conversation about what chi is and is not. Wish I remembered all of it, but I got a more realistic approach after this.
