You've been getting good stuff so far - some other bits to add:
The breath - a lot of the sitting Qigong that I learned (read=self-guided meditation) dealt with breath.
You follow the breath in and out of the body - count the breath until ten, then start over.
You can also concentrate on the tan tien - the whole idea is to cultivate Qi and your awareness of it.

Sitting postures need to be correctly aligned so that the Qi does not get constricted - like what Werdlicious said. Having a teacher is very important - so that you don't get into bad habits - or worse yet - do something that can lead to harm.

I totally agree with that you need to have a teacher for these things. While the breathing itself is not bad for you. Your mind is and extremely powerful tool and can actually cause physical changes depending on what you are concentrating on. I know that sounds flakey and new agey but it's true.

Also what are you looking to gain from the practice? Intent as it were is very important when doing this. As in anything you need to know what you are seeking before you try to find it.

I think your underlying point is that humans do not begin to tap their potential. On that point I'll agree 100%.

Right, I think how it is, is that we use every part of our brain, just not 100% of these parts.

we do use 100% of the brain BUT have failed to unlock the whole potential of the brain.
