Unfortunately, there are no judo schools here.

Rep Power: 39 | | | I have studied a lot of traditional JMA's so I am familliar with the terminology, I have also done a good deal of ukemi arts but I am not a Judoka per se.
We do have a Judo class at our dojo with which we will train with from time to time. The newer students are always so surprised one of us BJJ thugs (or "Karate guy" depending one what uniform I'm wearing) can do arial falls better than they can. LOL

Rep Power: 8 | | | That is surprising, most BJJ places I've come accross start from the knees. Not much opportunity to practice your break falls from there. |

Rep Power: 8 | | | One of the most useful skill I ever aquired were the breakfalls from Judo. I have used them in areas other than martial arts. Like when I fall off my bike, or trip while running or when I get tripped in soccer, or fall out of a tree. The list goes on and on. The one difference is that I don't slap in most of those occasions, I just roll (redirect the force into a circle rather than stopping myself halfway through. It does less damage that way.)
What do people think about slapping in the Judo/Ju-Jitsu breakfalls? Personally, I don't see the point of it. When I do an ender off my bike and I slap I'd get a worse case of road-burn than I do if I roll over a few times. Sliding along pavement or whatever is not pleasant at 30+ km/h
The one time where I do slap is if I drop out of a tree or get thrown straight down (more or less). I use the impact of my arms to dissipate more of the force.

Rep Power: 21 | | | When you slap you also let your body go with the natural flow .. rock if you will. If the force that your falling is great then naturally you want to roll.
Good point, I know my kids often roll or use breakfalling when their playing. |

Um...is there a reason you seem to fall out of trees so often? |

that's what I said....
it's a great skill to learn for any kid and you'll be glad with the skill when you're as old as Aqira and have to be very careful not to break your hips when you get out of bed without the care of your private nurse... | “ | Originally
