I got a broadsword for my birthday, just wondering.
Its got that gel/oil on the blade, but its does attract dirt.
What would be the best way to keep it clean and stop it from rusting as such.

Rep Power: 34 | | | It's probably a packing oil like cosmoline. Use a gun cleaning oil to get it off & use something teflon based & you'll be good. I personally stay away from WD40 because it causes gooping on the blade. It's a personal thing though.

Rep Power: 220 | | | If I'm not mistaken, it's a bit tougher to buy gun oil in a country where guns are illegal and not sold commonly on the regular market, though possibly you could get it from a rifle club if they'll sell it to you....
Though I would agree, I always used Remington Gun Oil with Teflon, stuff worked fantastic |

Are you serious about not being able to buy a gun in London? I knew thier was a reason I didn't like the English.
What a lame ass law. Everybody ought to have the right to protect themselves with a .357 or a 9 mm (hollow points of course)

Rep Power: 220 | | | Yep, no guns allowed, except for the shot gun and basic field rifle and even then it's not easy to get hold of as it is in the US.
You have the black market where fire arms are available of course, but more common is to carry a knife and even that is illegal |

Eh... you may be on to something there.
Certainly there's some kind of sporting store that would have something as simple as RemOil or Hoppe's?
If not... time to leave for warmer weather & remove the butt plug that is the gov't.

Rep Power: 220 | | | I think that is how the law came about, fear of revolt and rebellion where the US law came about to prevent tyranny and unlawful control |

Rep Power: 15 | | | Leaving aside the issue of which country has the craziest gun laws, there are plenty of non-gun thingies in most countries that are made out of metal that need to be protected from rust.
The number one thing is not to touch the blade with your hands. There are acids in your skin that cause rust.
Most kinds of gook that come on sword blades will come off with dish detergent. If it doesn't, it will probably dissolve in a few drops of machine oil. Then use the dish soap to clean off the machine oil.
The goop is usually on the blade for a reason-to keep it from rusting. I keep a tube of light-weight rust remover to rub on the blades of any swords I'm using. You can find something at any hardware or automotive store. It stinks so use it outside. Once every month or two is usually often enough. If I won't be using a sword for a while, I'll cover the blade with a thin layer of machine oil to stop it from rusting. |

Rep Power: 54 | | Cosmoline is most likely as stated previously what they come with. I live in one of the most corrosive environments around, and have abandoned oil for blades completely...
i use this now..
.
It's clear, clean and dry when used properly, will not attract dust and best of all...
it won't stain my silk pajamas.
Works great on moving parts in tactical folders etc. as well!
