Rep Power: 140 | | | did i tell y'all my ghrkha story?
no?
ok i'll tell you
my friend was a paratrooper (discharged now, broken knee cap)
he was on a training excercise with some gurkha's who were positioned at the tops of trees
to snipe on comming forces
for added realism the gurkha's decided that if they we're 'shot'
they would fall out of the trees
he said they were falling out of 20' trees
then getting up as if nothing had happened
proper hardcore

It's blocked by work.
I bought a couple of kukri's back in the late 90's from a guy in Va that was getting them direct from Nepal. Quite nice indeed. Basic but badass.... I'll have to post a pic when I get home since I get dinged here.

Rep Power: 157 | | | I have about 6 or 8 of those from that company... Actually my girlfriend bought and sent them to me when she was over there back in '99.
They make quality stuff but Himalayan Imports is a tad higher quality.

Rep Power: 220 | | | I've been interested in Khukris for a while, have always preferred the Tanto for a fighting knife as it matches my style, but thought I'd give 'er a try, just picked one up from here, so we'll see how she handles when I get her |

Rep Power: 155 | | | I've always been curious how those of you who are into these train with them. Existing techniques from other styles using this knife or gurkha specific techniques?

Rep Power: 100 | | | Now days there are several people doing some sort of "style" most is just adopting an Arnis method which does work well. There are some systems that are local to more tribal groups that are not taught in a school sense but more Father to Son. I learned one of those.
The Gurkha military style is very basic a few draws and strikes, some deflection and counter.
What most people don't understand about the blade is the geometry of it makes it one of the better fighting tools, and what it teaches is also good for empty hand.
The native systems much like Kali apply the same concepts weapon or empty hand. However in nepal it is also a tool and is used everyday, the Khukuri is constant in life.

That's kind of what I'd expected.
How structured are the local "systems"? With the knife being a part of daily activity how much fighting specific training is built on top of that?

Rep Power: 100 | | | The local systems on the surface appear simple yet they are in fact complex and can take years to reach a mastership. Like any weapons based system you have to be able to use both hands and various blade lengths, weights shapes.
There is a systematic method to learning but as far as the person you are either a student class (learning) or warrior class (able and proven) the only other is the Guru or teacher.
