Rep Power: 108 | | | After 2 years of starting Kung Fu, I decided I wanted to learn the 3-Section Staff and make that "MY" weapon. I was, of course, inspired by an old Hong Kong flick called Avenging Eagles.
So I got a book and practiced. I never got fully through the form in the book though. But I will tell you that the best teacher for 3-Section Staff is the 3-Section Staff. When you begin whirling that thing around you learn to respect it fast. My head and nuts felt the thwack of that thing more than once. Its also fun to get carried away and "learn" how to regain control of the weapon again.
I won't lie. There was many a time where I was so out of control with the spins I literally leg go and dived away like the staff was a grenade. Its a fun weapon! >_>;;

Rep Power: 0 | | | In my old kwoon we had a guy who would use it. He'd stand there for hours just extending it out on the floor & pulling it up to catch it. Great weapon if you have the time to learn it properly. My knees & head couldn't take it, mine's in the closet somewhere.... |

They are (censored) tricky, but once you get them down they are the most versatile weapon you will ever use.
Baton, Staff, Whip and more.
First few times I used them I got a huge lump on the melon, choked myself and whipped my back a good one, now that I've been using it for a few years, I'm much better off but still have accidents on occasion
It's been said that it is only a Master's weapon due to that versatility complexity. |

Rep Power: 108 | | | I decided I would rather learn Knife or Stick fighting...but even then I tend to shun weapons training over unarmed training.

Rep Power: 0 | | | Everybody that ever got good at the weapon has hit themselves many times! If you keep at it you can master it.
The Chinese sometimes categorize weapons into either: 1) easy to learn, hard to master, or 2) hard to learn, easy to master categories. The three-section staff definitely belongs to the second category.
Like downhill skiiing, the most important lesson to master might not be how to get started, but rather how to stop. Once the weapon starts moving, it doesn’t want to stop. The safe way to stop the weapon is not to attempt to slow it down close to oneself. That increases the chances of getting hit as the sticks start moving in random directions. One of the ways to stop the speeding weapon is to increase the size of the circle the sticks are traveling in (moving the radius of the circling away from your body). Then our friend gravity will take over and pull the sticks safely towards the ground. Good luck! |

Funny thing is the rubber stoppers we put on the ends of the staff. Someone asked once at a demo, "Do the rubber stoppers protect you from getting hurt?" My si jye replied, "No, they protect sifu's floor from getting damaged."
