Lan Yuen is on a distinguished road
Karambit

Anyone use these? I have a pretty interesting book, but have never actually held one. I've got one on order, looks different.

Thoughts?

We sell a Kerambit in my store Crouching Tiger Martial Arts and Boxing Supplies

It's a really nasty little thing (well, when you see it, it's actually not that little!) I think a good word to describe it would be "ergonomic" if you catch my drift!

They certainly are nasty. And very interesting.

Just keep in mind, they are designed for in-fighting at close range. They tend to struggle in the longer ranges against a regular straight blade.

Thoughts...

My Dear Friends,

I carry an Emerson Combat Karambit every day without fail. I prefer it to practically every other kind of fighting blade.

I would suggest The Karambit Demo as a good resource for learning exactly how this blade style is best utilized. It admittedly is very much a corto (close range) weapon, but flipping to extended grip will permit longer ranges to be engaged in a pinch.

As far as production karambits, I prefer the Emerson versions. An identical trainer with a blunt blade is also available, and I highly recommend it to prevent blood loss while navigating the learning curve.

Other quality production karambits include the now-discontinued Spyderco Warren Thomas folding karambit, the Derespina Model 10 fixed blade karambit, and 5.11 folding karambits, as well as a ridiculous number of custom blades from makers like James Coogler (CNC Bladewerkz) and the aforementioned Derespina.

----
Kurt
