My Dear Friends,
As a native of WV I have a few suggestions that might prove useful.
First, do NOT carry a spear on the trails here. Notwithstanding that if you encounter a LEO they will hassle you, but you have little chance of facing down an angry black bear with a pointed stick.
While WV state law does provide for the lawful open carry of a handgun, this does not apply to the great outdoors. Carrying a handgun in the forest and on trails will get you arrested for hunting out of season if nothing else. A better suggestion is a concealed handgun permit - WV recognizes a large number of out-of-state permits and it has been written into state law that the carry permit will allow concealed carry in the forest. Keep in mind that if at any time the handgun appears in your hand you are hunting, at least as far as the state is concerned.
If you do carry a handgun, please make it of a sufficiently large caliber to bring down a predatory animal rather than just making it angry. In my experience that generally entails using a caliber that begins with a 4. If said caliber ends with a 5 that is even better.
