Jack's River... haven't heard of that for a while. My dad used to make "visits" up there in 80's with some of his buddies for weekends of fishing.

No wonder he always came back looking worse than when he left.

Okay...

My Dear Friends,

As a native of WV I have a few suggestions that might prove useful.

First, do NOT carry a spear on the trails here. Notwithstanding that if you encounter a LEO they will hassle you, but you have little chance of facing down an angry black bear with a pointed stick.

While WV state law does provide for the lawful open carry of a handgun, this does not apply to the great outdoors. Carrying a handgun in the forest and on trails will get you arrested for hunting out of season if nothing else. A better suggestion is a concealed handgun permit - WV recognizes a large number of out-of-state permits and it has been written into state law that the carry permit will allow concealed carry in the forest. Keep in mind that if at any time the handgun appears in your hand you are hunting, at least as far as the state is concerned.

If you do carry a handgun, please make it of a sufficiently large caliber to bring down a predatory animal rather than just making it angry. In my experience that generally entails using a caliber that begins with a 4. If said caliber ends with a 5 that is even better.

----
Kurt

The laws on carrying Spears on Apalachian trails is that you have to ask for her consent first. And make sure she has underwear on. And check for her latest weight, unless you are a strong person.

In Kentucky the law is that the blade can not be more than 6 inches in length. As far as carrying a spear I don't think there is any law against it. I have worked out in The Daniel Boone National Forest here in Ky with my Broadsword and no one said anything to me. I was in a camp area away from others. I think there was a park ranger there but said nothing to me. If you get stopped tell them that your a martial artist not a killer and demonstrate part of a spear form for them so they know your not lying to them. Thats what I would do. I did get stopped for speeding in my car one time and they found my Broadsword and questioned me. I offered to demonstrate a form, they said no but they didn't take my sword, just gave me the speeding ticket

There are many websites about hiking the trails. They have do's and do not's and are very informative and up to date on what is happening on the trail.

If you want a cane. I like this one. BubbaStik.com
