Rep Power: 21 | | | Yeah. I know a Haidong Gumdo (a style of Korean swordsmanship) instructor in Australia. When I was a white belt he wanted to spar me. He had technique, but I nailed him unintentionally across the midsection. Because he knew there was a huge difference in our speed and endurance. I train a lot... he doesn't. He started training with a shortened weight bar, and tore his rotator cuff because he was trying to wield it as a sword while trying to go flat out. |

Rep Power: 18 | | | Here is a good question, Anyone have a resource for the real weights of the old weapons?

Rep Power: 21 | | | But that's also hard because so many legends have been made up about the weight of the old weapons. As it has been mentioned about the Guan Dao wielded by Guan Yu, was supposed to be so heavy that normal people couldn't wield it. |

Sorry bro you have been badly misinformed!
I didn't read the entire thread, but you have been listening to the General Kwan folklore too much. General Kwan is the only person that is claimed to have had a 100lb weapon, his famous Kwan Do.

Surely archaeological digs have found old weapons. There should be some in museums. Shouldn't be that hard.

Rep Power: 100 | | | For jian, I can say that a 3' jian (90cm) was 600-780g, blade only. With fittings weighting 100-250g, you have a sword weight of 700-1050g, with the very heavy ones being very rare (and not necessarily functional).
A sword, or saber, which you cannot handle really well, without your arm hanging down after 10 minutes, is not a functional, good one. There were people using training weapons with extraordinary weight, like a man size saber. I still think that this was nothing meant for "fencing". Someone with a light jian would slice someone wielding a 20lb saber in no time.

Rep Power: 21 | | | Of course. But all I'm saying is that there have been exaggerations about the weights of some weapons. |

If you cant move it right then not realy. In a real fight you dont constantly deflect blows.(Note: I mean from each individual eprson you fight) Fights rarley see 30 seconds. |

Rep Power: 100 | | | Ok, let me rephrase this - if YOU attack ME with a 20lb saber, and I have a 1.5lb one, you are toast within 0.5 seconds.
