Sweating in the car on the way to the gym is not cutting weight.

I'd say this is in the sense of, when you're in a car with a guy who starves to cut weight, you're not going to drive to the Mc and throw in some burgers and a milkshake, and eat lots of twinkies to kill time while his eyes are popping out and his saliva floods the car.

I'd say in a hot state at 40° (Celsius) outside temperature and burning sun, a car with switched off clima is a poor mans sauna. I had a black car with no cooler, and when I got in the car in summer when it was in the sun for some hours before, I sweat like hell for some time because it was 70° in the car until the wind cooled it.

That's not the point. Of course the inside of a car can get pretty hot and you may sweat a lot therein, but that does not constitute cutting weight. One (or even several) car rides does not mean you are cutting, it just means your car will smell bad. Cutting is a very deliberate process that takes days or even weeks, it is not just a quick sweat and avoiding the drive through. I say this not to pick nits, but because anyone who has cut hard weight will tell you that it is a special hell that is in no way encapsulated by a ride to the gym in a hot car.

Exactly. Doing it this way may lose a bit of weight in water, but that goes right back on when you drink to re-hydrate yourself. Only works for a quick battle against the scales when you're just a hair over the limit.

Even dropping water weight isn't much fun, although I guess it's more rewarding than actually cutting because it goes so much more quickly. I had to drop maybe 10 pounds in 2 weeks for a tournament, so I just ate a lot less and trained harder, but I couldn't have possibly made the weight cut had I not grappled for like 2 hours the night before wearing many layers and only drinking the absolute minimum of water. I managed to drop like 4 pounds water weight in a day and a half or so and it got me well under the weight category.

Of course, that was the tournament where there were only 4 girls, so they just put us all into one open category. So I did it all for nothing....

Maybe it's just me, but this whole cutting weight thing seems *really* unhealthy...I dated a wrestler in H.S. and I remember the hell he used to go through. Anyway, just my $00.02.

My son use to do some really strange things to drop weight. Though one method worked well he would wrap a plastic trash bag under his sweat suit and run 5 miles. The one good thing is the 5 years he was on the team he stayed in shape, but then in football season he would have to bulk back up.

In response to Krissy, yeah, it is pretty unhealthy. But having to grapple up a weight class would suck more than having to drop weight. If there's any way to make it one lower, usually people go for that. I know my weight cutoff is I usually either have to get under 140 or 145 or else I fight unlimited, so it's worth it to cut weight.

I'd say cutting water (usually near the end) is a big part of cutting, but only a part.

Oh, the plastics. Part of a rough process of self-abuse. I passed out in the sauna a few times, only to be literally dragged up to the wrestling room to layer on the plastics and roll for a couple more hours straight ("roll" may be too charitable a term, my teammates were basically throwing me around enough to keep me moving) all after going a good 2-3 days with 0 food in me. There's more, but... nevermind
