Rep Power: 64 | | | Did wrestling in high school. Never understood others' fixation on dropping weight. I stayed pretty active and participated on athletic teams all year so I stayed in pretty good shape. But regardless how hard we got pushed in football, I almost always dropped an additional 10 lbs when winter came. I didn't do anything special for it, just the practice sessions were more physically intense and I dropped some extra fat. Only time I ever did something extra is if I was a bit over my normal weight class, like after holiday feasts or something, but that was only 2-3 times at most.
So many other guys tried to cut even more weight and would either bag up and run, go without eating/drinking, spitting, or more usually a combination. Most of them treated it like a badge of honor and would constantly rag on the basketball players, saying they couldn't handle the "weight management" that wrestlers went though. I considered it a mark of stupidity/desperation. I don't see how dropping to a 5 lb lighter division makes much difference at all, especially when the means to do so saps your strength and energy. What ever advantage was gained in a lighter opponent was lost to the malaise.
It's one thing if someone gets ill or the coach wants a different match-up and asks someone to drop to fill the void, but regularly doing that to yourself is rather counter productive. If you want to do it right, do some extra ( normal ) cardio, don't just take it off in water. Manage your diet a little better by substituting better foods, not cutting them out altogether.

You notice the special helmets and body suits elite cyclists wear? Do you think it would make much difference for me to wear that kind of gear? Would it make me an elite cyclist? Do me any more good than a pair of old sweats and one of those bubble-like helmets kids wear if I were competing against a high-level cyclist? So why would those guys wear that stuff? |

The worst I heard was this year's UFC wannabe program on Spike where one of the guys was trying to drop like 20lbs!!??? in a few days to "make weight". Man, what kind of organization promotes deadly crap like that?

Saying i didn't wrestle? If so, it's rather bad form calling people liars whom you don't know. | “ | Originally

Saying you didn't wrestle? Yet you say you do "wrestling by default." Or are you saying you never cut weight either? But this next part that kind of negates that idea. | “ | Originally

A little clarification would help.
