I think it would have more use for solo practice, or if you have a partner there, maybe he holds Focus Pads. If you are sparring, you go for it all the time. If a sound happens at all and you aren't trying to advance your position, you are slacking.

Rep Power: 40 | | | Bas Rutten's audio training tapes have a very similar principle. He calls out combos/exercises/drills like a virtual coach, and you respond and have to keep up with the timing. I use them often. Especially, when the weather is bad outside.

I should add, with the exercise you described, as with most isometric exercises, you have to practice with your arm at different points of extention. For example, a close range punch where your arm stays very bent, then a half extended punch, then a fully extended punch. Otherwise you will not gain the full benefit of the exercise.
