Excuse my ignorance, but is losing your period harmful? Are you saying it can cause osteoporosis in the long run? |

Depends how much you work out. If you work out a lot you can skip your period for a month or two.
It also depends on the food you eat.

Yes, the same conditions that cause amenorrhea in female athletes also lead to the osteoporosis, and the hormonal changes during your menstrual cycle keep your bones strong by preventing excessive calcium resorption. Female athlete triad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Really. Wow that's so not true.
no offense.
I know more about this subject, I'm a girl.
You usually lose things like iron and magnesium which also help build strong bones.

Rep Power: 54 | | Actually that should have read "...strong by preventing excessive calcium...", (edit) but that is part of a larger cycle that is out of the scope of this. Estrogen is the key here.
I'll quote an expert source, Amazon.com: Advanced Sports Nutrition: Dan Benardot: Books
Put simply, "Amenorrhea is strongly associated with a loss in bone density..".

Rep Power: 150 | | | Sigh. I'm just not gonna go into things like how minerals like magnesium assist in calcium absorption & therefore a lower level=less absorption.
Essentially, if you must go outside the physical norm to achieve something, your body will suffer. If you routinely do this or are always outside the physical norm, your body will suffer permanently.
