My Gary Fisher bike cost $350. They make a bike that cost around $250 but they also have bikes as high as $450 and $500. I live in Ky.

I'm a fan of the BMX because I'm short so a small bike is more comfortable, and mountain bikes are hard to mount.

Rep Power: 54 | | How tall are you and how much do you weigh?
If $400 sounds like too much, get a "cruiser-class" bmx (usually with 24" wheels)
or find a local bike exchange or shop that has used single speeds. A good bike will last way longer than you will miss the money...
Best buy in dealer level bikes would be Giant hands down, because they make the frames for almost everyone else.
Specialized, Trek(Gary Fisher etc.) and a couple of others would follow close behind.
Specialized generally has the best customer service ime.
If at all possible, avoid Mongoose, Pacific, Huffy, Next and pretty much anything in a department store or Sports Authority etc.
I teach these classes... Park Tool Website
and am one of the bike mechanics at the... World Championship » IRONMAN.com
so feel free to ask any questions.
In the end spend your money at a shop(still not a department store) that you feel you can trust, the brand will be pretty irrelevant then.

Rep Power: 54 | | | You'll probably need a mountain bike in the 16-18" frame size, depending on the brand and your proportions. Test ride a bunch of stuff and one will call your name.
This is the best time of the year to buy as most '08 product should be on sale. Biggest trade show of the year coming up in a couple weeks so shops are motivated to sell.
Looks like a buncha good shops in Augusta...

Rep Power: 54 | | | Yep so if you can get a $500 bike for $400 (20% is a big reduction in the bike biz) that would be ideal. You will be happy you did it, trust me. Bikes properly cared for last a very long time, so while they might seem expensive at first, they really are very economical.
Bear in mind cycling is very addictive, do not blame me if in a couple years time you find yourself spending atrocious amounts of hard earned money on the latest geegaw, doodad and thingamajig, swathed in various layers of brightly colored high tech wicking fabrics while clutching the latest issue of Velonews, or worse find yourself as some apathetic hipster, cruising around college towns with an old single speed with '80s cop shades and a copy of the Rivendell catalog in your too tight pants...
You have been warned.

Rep Power: 54 | | Here's one of the local kids, about 9 or 10 at the time.
He overshot the landing after flying about 30ft on that one and bent the fork backwards.
Kinda weird shot, that jump is much bigger than it looks, the guy standing at the bottom is a good sized adult if that helps.
