Bas Rutten's Audio Tape Workouts

I added Bas Rutten's Audio Tapes to my training routine several months ago.

For those of you who don't know it.

There are 5 workouts. Each workout is 28 minutes long with Bas Rutten shouting out commands at you like a virtual coach. The tapes are accompanied with a reference video that explains and demonstrates all the combos and exercises contained in the audio workouts. You can do the workouts in 3 ways. a) Shadow Boxing, b) Bag Training, c) Focus Mitts with partner. The workouts are:

1) Boxing ( 10 x 2 minute rounds with 1 minute breaks )
2) Boxing ( 7 x 3 minute rounds with 1 minute breaks )
3) Muay Thai ( 10 x 2 minute rounds with 1 minute breaks )
4) Muay Thai ( 7 x 3 minute rounds with 1 minute breaks )
5) All Round Workout MMA ( 28 minutes with no break )

I started with the boxing workouts to ease into it ( my arms were a bit more flexible than my legs ). The last few months I have been switching between the 2 Muay Thai workouts, and it has done wonders for my stamina level. I was always a bit afraid of the MMA workout, since it's one that Bas used personally to train for his MMA events.

Last week I tried it out ( MMA workout ) and I completely collapsed in a broken pile about 17 minutes in. I really thought I could last longer, but Bas just absolutely murdered me.

Today, I just finished the whole workout for the first time. I admit, that in the last parts ( 18 minutes onwards ), for the pushups sections, I just did a couple then held the stretched out pushup position like Bas said to do if I couldn't do any more, rather than falling down.

The workout ends with Bas shouting from 1 - 10. Each number represents how many times you must jump up with your knees to your chest. So you pyramid up to 10. Thought I was gonna have a heartattack or something when I finished. Holy S*** ! I think that was the hardest thing I have done in my life. It pushes you past every physical/emotional limit you thought you had working out. I'm typing this 20 minutes after my shower, and I'm still slightly catching my breath.

Gonna try do the MMA workout once a week to make sure I don't get slack.

Anyways, just wanted to share, and ask if anyone else has tried these routines ?

It's really great when you can't go outside and you just have 30 min and limited space to train. It's taken away my favorite excuse for a day off. LOL .

I don't have a tape player and it didn't come with the Big DVD's of Combat set that I bought ( though the reference video was in there ), so I downloaded the mp3's. I think it comes bundled with his Big Books of Combat Vol.1 and 2 set.

It's great getting verbal instructions from Bas. He makes you always want to try harder. "This will pump up your neck !" always gets a chuckle from me.

This is part of the Reference Vid for one of the 2 MMA workouts I was able to find ( sorry I forgot to post there are 4, not 1. Sorry I was really tired when I typed it ). Gives an idea of the vibe.

Nice frigging workout. Great for cardio days.I wonder how hard it would be to convert fo use in my style? I mean using CLF techniques in stead of boxing.

I was thinking add the Bagua hands instead of the punches they had I just didnt want to forget about the other punches either. Ofcourse I could do one with the bagua hands nd one with straight punches.

Green_Horn,

Bas said ( in an interview ) that everyone is different, and that we must all do things the way that feels right to us. So I highly doubt he would have a problem with you doing some modification to the workouts.

Converting might be hard for the Boxing and Thai Workouts ( but I say try ). The way the combos work, is like so. If bas shouts:

"One" It's a jab ( though bas says it must be more like a left straight with knockout power ).
"two" Left Straight - Right Straight.
"three" Left Straight - Right Straight - Left Hook.
"Four" Left Straight - Right Straight - Left Hook - Right Straight.

Those are the numbered combos. Then Bas throws in all the extra stuff inbetween and also combines the numbers, so he might say " give me a 2 and a 4 followed by right straight - left hook. ".

The combos on the Thai Workouts are the same kind of combos, except every time he says a combo, you automatically add in a kick or knee at the end of every combo. So a number 2, for example, would be Left Straight - Right Straight - Left Kick ( or knee ).

For the all around workout I tried, he slows the pace for the shadowboxing. The reason is, the shadowboxing is the closest you get to a rest. So the idea in this one, is he gives the occassional numbered combo, and inbetween you do your own thing ( plenty of room for strikes from your style. )

Some exercises are fixed, like jumping squats, there is only one thing he means. But when he says work abs, he means do ANY abs exercise you like. So it can also be open ended depending.

Ofcourse I could do one with the bagua hands nd one with straight punches.

Sounds good. The 2 most important things Bas says, is every strike must be 100% knockout power and to have your feet flat on the floor when punching.

P.S. After complaining about the tapes, I see that he has not only released the workouts on CD, there is a Version 2 going to be released this year. So I'm gonna have to buy it after all. Version 2 ! Yea !!!

Just to clear up any confusion I cause with regards to what routines are available.

1) Boxing ( 10 x 2 minute rounds with 1 minute breaks )
2) Boxing ( 7 x 3 minute rounds with 1 minute breaks )
3) Muay Thai ( 10 x 2 minute rounds with 1 minute breaks )
4) Muay Thai ( 7 x 3 minute rounds with 1 minute breaks )
5) All Round Workout MMA Routine 1 ( 28 minutes with no break )
6) All Round Workout MMA Routine 2 ( geared for partner work )
7) All Round Fighting ( 2 minute rounds )
8) All Round Fighting ( 3 minute rounds )

The All Round Fighting routines are awesome, because it mixes the Thai Boxing stuff up with sprawling and ground movement, so your breathing rhythm gets broken very quickly.
