Description:

featuring the synergy of Crafty Dog and Gabe Suarez
Evolutionary leaps occur when two or more structures band together in new ways. With this triple DVD the synergistic convergence of two men, each from different worlds, unveils a new paradigm-- the interface of gun, knife and empty hand.
When facing any of these dangerous possibilities, you want to have the cutting edge, high IQ responses that come from the synergy of Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny and Gabe Suarez.
In this DVD you will be shown how to frame the approach of potential problems and fence close quarter situations using "the Kali Fence" and how to intercept and defend against attacks from this position. Principal amongst these defenses is the innovative "Dog Catcher" which allows for one initial default response to the most common high and mid line attacks of empty hand and knife from which one can either access one's own weapons or respond empty handed. Your understanding of the material will be intensified by seeing it all tested in high pressure scenario testing. "If you see it taught, you see it fought." (c)

My DVDs arrived from California to South Africa in 2 weeks from shipping.
DLO1 is a 3 DVD set ( $60 ). The first 2 DVDs cover the "Die Less Often" weekend seminar that was conducted at the Machado BJJ academy, by Guro Marc Denny ( Crafty Dog ) of DBMA. And Gabe Suarez of Suarez International.
The idea of the course, is that both of these individuals identified that they were lacking in certain aspects of the combat "whole". eg: Marc Denny realised he needed to learn about Guns and integrate this into his training. Gabe Suarez realised he needed the CQC integration into his firearm skills.
The material covered is extensive ( though Crafty says it is merely an Introduction ). I was most interested in learning the Dog Catcher and Kali Fence. What impressed me about all of the material, is the simplicity. There is no complicated stuff on here, although having the whole weekend condensed into a few hours can leave your brain feeling overloaded. Just the footwork matrix Crafty teaches, needs practice time ( and thought ) to fully appreciate what it can do for you.
The DVD starts with a lecture about awareness, sizing people up, keeping maximum distance from suspected people, and avoiding bad people and places, etc. This is supplemented with various footage of people getting stabbed and one of the most savage street fights I have ever seen. I actually felt sick.
They talk about creating witnesses, establishing your request for space, and looking for an escape ( simply spiral out and run away ) if your enviroment allows for it.
They go through positions people like to carry their weapons ( whether gun or knife based ), go over the pros and cons of each one. Then they explain a few "tells", or subtle indications that someone could be allowing for quicker weapon access.
The moves taught ( eg: Dog Catcher, Kali Fence, Brachial Stun, etc. ) , can be used by almost any type of person. You do not need to be big or strong. They discuss, the fact that, when you are attacked on the streets, it will generally be by someone bigger and stronger than you are. That is the nature of the "hunter" mentality. Crafty and Suarez often tell you that one of the biggest mistakes is getting into a receptive, reactive, and defensive state of mind against aggressive onslaught. The moves taught are very much based on lining up with your opponent correctly, stance allowing weapon access, not remaining in one place to defend, using angular crashes and FOF application.
They also discuss the +1 principle. If you see one person, assume there are at least 2. If you see 2, assume at least 3.
What is also great, is that Crafty has some experience with groundfighting ( Machado BJJ ), and he is able to identify where BJJ can get you killed, and where it can save your life. Of course, almost every single simulated attack, resulted in going to the ground. Sometimes to the wall first, then the ground. Almost every time someone was "killed", it was from being stabbed in the clinch then on the ground.
Crafty talks about the need for what he calls "Jitsuwareness", and keeping the hips free for positioning and to allow weapon access from the ground.
Suarez also goes in depth about the common mistake people make. Which is to go for your weapon draw, when your opponent is already drawn and coming in for the kill. Then they teach ways to first deal with the situation, that also allow for weapon access.
They often state that none of the material will work 100% every time. The idea is to increase your chances and percentages, and to "Die Less Often".
Marc Denny talks about the Monkey Brain. When you are suddenly put under extreme stress and pressure, and all the fancy stuff you learn goes out the window and you are left with ook ook ook. Using one default response to most primal angles of attack is superior to learning a different block for each angle.
He also teaches how the fancy stuff has it's place, but you need to know how/when to use it through correct positioning, timing, and placement.
The material is specially designed not to give the ciminals any further edge. A criminal watching the material would learn nothing that would give them any further advantage. They do not teach you anything about ambushing/killing someone with a knife, that the criminal element doesn't already know. What they do is teach you how to understand, resist, and overcome that kind of aggressive "sewing-machine" ambush attack with high percentile results.
The Third DVD is the extra footage. It contains extensive interviews with Gabe Suarez and Marc Denny. There is also a great collection of fights from the gatherings, as well as highlights from Marc Denny's fights in the past.
I have left out a lot, because I would just write for ages. Obviously there is a difference between watching and saying "ah", then trying it out with a partner. We did this on Friday, and the material taught on this DVD was able to catch 99% of the knife attacks done from close range.
It's not magic, or some exotic skillset. It is simple, logical, and structured. And it deals with the kind of attack that many MA systems have no good answers for.
Definitely worth my time and money.
