Great movie. Great story line. Great martial arts scenes. Even though this hasn't been released to the US yet (Chinese version only available), the US Version will be a HIT!! It's Croutching Tiger Hidden Dragon 10 times over!! You won't be disappointed.

This is one of those movies that just gets better as you watch it. As thr story unfoldes I found myself even more eager to hear more in an attempt to unravel what really happened.
The martial arts is Awesome though I am really not a fan of wire act Martial arts. Hero does have its share of super powered moves, But its does take a back seat to a fantastic story that is filmed is such a way to put Hollywood to shame. The use of color in the art of filmaking is rarely exploited to the level done in this movie and plays a key role as a charactor of the movie.
One of the most beautiful things about this movie is that it didn't need to be overtly sexual or violent. Much was left for the imagination to fill in, making the story much more appealing on a personal level.
This one may go down in history as a film that changed the industry. If not Hollyood will never see the light.

Quick, someone hand me an extra hand, I don't have enough thumbs for this movie. This movie is an instant hit for all. It has an excellent story line, astounding graphics and audio. The best part is for the kung fu because it has that too.

Imagine for a moment a film that has the action of kung fu, now imagine one of the best cinematography films in the industry! This is Hero.
Buy this movie for those reasons and I am sure you will find other surprises as well, and with a cast like this you can't go wrong!

Now Tarantino has brought this Zhang Yimou epic to the big screens and it\'s much more accessible to everyone, but you might want to check out the Director\'s cut which has an extra twenty minutes of footage, in fact a lot of the scenes are different and it gives the whole film a much more relaxed feel.
If you really want to see this film in context then check out some of Zhang Yimou\'s other films, \'House of Flying Daggers\' is the only martial arts one though and in fact really the only other action film.
Zhang Yimou is one of the new breed of fifth generation Chinese film makers and there are plenty of interesting themes that run through all of his movies, his use of colour for example especially red is the most noticeable. Many of his films have been banned in China because they have an undercurrent of questions of the individual in contrast to the government or society. The best example of his early works is in my opinion \'The Road home\', it\'s a very simple but moving tale with no action, sets or even actors as such so don\'t expect hollywood endings or blockbuster action epic, worth a look for Zhang Ziyi imho.
Films by Zhang Yimou:
-Red Sorghum (1987)
-Raise the Red Lantern (1992)
-To live (1994)
-Shanghai Traid (1995)
-Not One Less (1999)
-The Road Home (2001)
-Happy Times (2002)
-Hero (2003)
-House of Flying Daggers (2004)

Wonderful Visuals & Cinematography Interesting story

|
Cons:

seemed a little fake

From a visual stand point this movie was really nice to watch, I liked the colours they used.
However I did not feel that they made good use of Jet Li\'s capabilities as a Martial Artist, I also found the choreography to be too much over the top, not unlike the fight scene in the trees in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
I think the action choreography and wirework was too much like the completely implausible action sequence in Matrix Revolutions.
I wouldn\'t watch it again and I wouldn\'t spend any money buying it.
I think it could have been done better than it was. The only redeeming feature was the visual landscapes, but I can get that buy borrowing or buying a book of images from China from the Library or bookstore.
3/10

Pros:
|
Better story than most action flicks
|
|
Cons:
|
Acting in general, overdone wire work
|
|
I\'ll probably take some flak for this, but I only found this flick to be above average at best. I\'ve never been a Jet Li fan and this didn\'t particularly help change my opinion.
Synopsis:
When China was still divided into warring provinces, The Lord of the Qin province invites the Nameless swordsman ( Li ) to his fortress as thanks for dispatching the 3 most notorious assassins in all the middle kingdom. For many years the ruler had been on constant watch for his life and now he seeks to honor and reward Nameless for his service.
The film unfolds in flashbacks to Nameless\' encounters with each of these assassins as he relays the story to his Lord. Presenting the story this way removes the tension and suspense since you already know the outcome. The only question is how the interview between Lord servant will unravel.
As far as story goes, it\'s a bit meatier than most action flicks so I have to give it high marks in that department. The acting itself left a lot to be desired. But that could also be the Oriental style where they show little emotion anyway. I also have to dock the marketing a bit for Billing Zhang Ziyi so high in this. Her role is minor at most so guys, don\'t get too excited.
The fighting scenes are filmed and choreographed well, but are rather short and a little unsatisfying. Wire work is also employed a bit too often and to some unnecessary extremes. Cinematography is done well, mixing color palettes for different sequences.
All in all, I give the movie a 7/10. It definitely merits a rental, but I\'d only buy it if I could find it for around $10.
