The special effects are very dated, and the costumes of the 5 ghosts are extremely poor (think Raggedy Ann in white spandex) but if you enjoy bizarre slapstick humor then you will probably enjoy this film, if you would like to see Jackie Chan perform some excellent kung fu then you will also enjoy this movie.

This might just be one of my least favorite Chan movies.
It was IMHO a poor attempt of being funny and the Kung Fu wasn't that outstanding enough to make me watch the movie a second time...
Costumes and special effects??
Yikes.....
When there are so many great movies by this guy the only reason to remember this one is to make sure you don't make the same mistake that I made...
And buy it....

As a big, big fan of Jackie Chan I have to say it is one of the worst films I have seen him do. Much like Chief, I could only bear to watch it once. I was lucky, however, because it was given to me as a gift. Go buy Jackie Chan's Police Force, that's where all the cool stuff you want to see started and you'll be able to tell.

Hmm... looks like many folks here don't like this movie. I actually disagree! I pulled it out and watched it for the second time!! And it was actually better this time around.
Definitely NOT the best Jackie Chan movie, but it is not the worst. I think I will add and review the absolute worst this week... "Young Tiger" it's called.
This movie is about Lung, a mischevious student at the Shaolin Temple who is always doing difficult exercises such as copying an entire book with an enormously heavy brush as punishment for his pranks and bad behavior. When a book containing the almost unbeatable "7 fist" style is stolen from the temple, Lung is punished again because he was supposed to be guarding outside. One night Lung reports to the temple to guard the library and the monks are all frightened by ghosts who have appeared. Lung is the only one not afraid and he goes in, only to fall asleep at his post, like always. He wakes up to the spirits (and yes, raggedy ann in white spandex is a very apt description...) playing pranks on him, and eventually subdues them, finding that they are the spirits of the legendary and long lost 5 style fist book, each one representing Dragon, Snake, Tiger, Crane, Leopard. Lung makes the spirits teach him the style and he goes off to fight a man who wants to rule all the tribes. That's all I'll tell you for now because I don't want to ruin the ending for you... For an old Shaw Kung Fu movie - the story really isn't THAT bad.
Pros - An entertaining story with an interesting twist that is actually a bit of a surprise - even with some blatant clues many people I watched this movie with didn't get it until it was revealed... and I probably just ruined it for you all... One of the best parts (although really random and weird) of this movie is when Lung runs around catching snakes and frogs and chickens and stuffs them in his pants so he can make a stew... very strange...
Cons - Decent fighting that is interesting to watch at least, but really more choreographed than anything else; The effects for the spirits are quite bad - the skeletons are funny, and the sound effects just horrible. Unfortunately this was the dubbed version, which really had a bad effect on the film as a whole, because it was very poorly dubbed. The finishing moves of the "bad guy" are quite hilarious. My favorite is when he does a cartwheel on a guy to finish him off. That's the stuff of Mortal Kombat legend baby! And their hair just rocks. For some reason I couldn't stop thinking of Spock while looking at the main bad guy...
Overall I give it a six. I would be interested in seeing the subtitled version... hearing the actual actors inflections rather than some crappy dubbed version is always better IMO. I think the dubbing was the worst flaw - but it definitely had its fair share of others! I think you should watch it anyway, and it can be found for pretty cheap too.
