OK, first off, the "mantis" part of this film doesn't appear until 2/3 of the way through. However, when it does show up, the fighting is crisp, the mantis moves clear, and there is much rejoicing. The "shaolin" part of the film is mostly seen in the beginning, as Our Hero takes on none other than Master Killer himself (Gordon Liu) and a "wrestler" with a TERRIBLE wig -- and that's saying a lot in a Shaw Bros. flick -- in a regrettably short challenge match. Frankly, I think Master Killer was fed some bad tofu, because his skills were mysteriously sub-par. Oh wait, this is a Shaw Bros. production -- never mind.
The DVD quality is good, with few extras other than a couple of bonus trailers, no glitches in play and well-balanced sound. Watch this film for the nice mantis sequences near the end; the rest of the fighting is inconsistent and riddled with movie-fu (no flying though). It's got a halfway decent plot though, so it's worth a rainy Saturday afternoon to watch.
