I'd heard so much about this film from friends that when I saw the DVD release on display I grabbed it. Leung Kar Yan stars as Ah Chi, the classic happy-go-lucky guy with a heroic streak. In defending a street urchin and grandfather, he runs afoul of a rival gang and is kicked out of his kung fu school. Naturally, the grandfather is a mantis master and Ah Chi goes about trying to learn this mysterious style. The hook for this film comes at the end when the expected old-school butt-whoopin' takes place. Ah Chi takes it wayyy further than most grand-finale fights. You'll find yourself hitting the rewind button to go through the end again.
The DVD quality is satisfactory, with good video and decent sound, and the dubbing's not too painful, either. Leung Kar Yan's fighting is very nice, fast and clean, although you don't see too much distinctive "mantis" (beyond a comical-looking pose or two) until he ramps up to 11 on the intensity scale at the end.

thundering mantis is a good kung fu flick. if you appreciate the old school style movies (good guy meets master, learns weird but effective style, must avenge someone, grand finale fight) then this is for you. if you want to see something that reaches beyond that, then you might not have fun with this one. it does have some good fight sequences and i found the humor in it enjoyable. the dubbing is ok and picture quality is good. the beginning is awesome. the opening credits show a lot of forms and movement from the cast. i eve like the music from the beginning -- it's kinda cheesy but that is what is appealing. finally , the last fight is the ****!! i watched multiple times and the final fight is "worth the price of admission by itself". Leung Kar Yan (main/hero character)goes off the deep end and fights with viciousness not seen in many MA movies. i couldn't believe the end... wow!!! check it out, i think you'll be glad you did
