Hmm, a Jackie Chan sequel without Jackie Chan? Well, young Foggy may not have the dynamic acrobatics (or clownish mug) of the first movie's hero, but in Drunken Master 2 (ahem, Dance of the Drunk Mantis) Jackie's replacement does all right. Sam the Seed returns in a triumphant drunken tour de force that involves drinking, some more drinking, a little kung fu, and more drinking. He's not too fond of Foggy, the "surprise bundle of joy" who appeared while he was off adventuring ... for about 16 years. So the Foggy he meets is the archetypal Nice Kid With Minimal Kung Fu Skills, who takes care of his mom and gets beat up a lot. Sam agrees to teach Foggy drunken kung fu, but abuses him instead. So Foggy, not a complete idiot, runs away.
How he comes to learn Drunken Mantis style is, well, the rest of the story, so go get the DVD, which is a halfway decent transfer (the sound is a little grainy, and the picture isn't great). And frankly, I don't think you could use the movie's invented drunken mantis styles (the bad guy does drunken mantis too) for any practical purpose, but Foggy does have quite a few nice moves on the side. He also bathes regularly and manages to avoid the hypnotic wiles of Demon Whiskey -- er, rice wine -- which puts him about two notches above Sam the Seed from the start, in my book.
