I just finished this book and I really enjoyed it. It's a very interesting look into how Martial Arts and the warrior culture still affect modern day practitioners. I was a little worried that this may be some kind of MA 10-step program .."this is how you should live" but the book leaves much up to the readers conciousness and decisions. Only complaints are it was a bit preachy at times and to short a book to really dive into the subject, still a very good addition to any practitioners library.

I wonder just how true-to-life this book actually is?
If the proposition is that you will benefit living the life of a samurai, then perhaps you might find it enjoyable - but also everyone around you will think you're a tight fisted wan*er!
I really really dont know why people have this image that samurai were good guys. Many of the books written on the whole bushido thing only go back as far as the 150 or so years prior to the meiji restoration - much of this time spent with many samurai boozing it up, throwing money around and flirting with women; not carving it up on the battle ground like some klingon on speed holding honour above everything else!
People need to remember that back in the days when samurai were Samurai, they were generally evil, usually cruel and in many ways twisted. So they added a few rules to make it seem so much better for them to get away with what they were doing. Surely that is just propaganda?!
So. Even though i've not read this book, im hoping its teaching people to go into bars, start fights because people "looked at you the wrong way" and that you pull out your 4 foot sword and chop them in half. Coz really, thats all they ever did when they werent getting the crap kicked out of them by the mongols/chinese/other samurai..

I've had a copy of this book for a long time....really great book on how to live a moral life based on principles taken from martial arts.
Despite the previous post....books like this...the Hagakure....etc...speak of ideal Samurai....those who were true master's/warriors with honor and integrity. Not the "samurai" grunt soldiers that raped women, stole...etc....
It's about principles.
Nevertheless....this book is a good read and very insightful. I would suggest anyone read it.

I have owned this book for a long time now. I dont see it as a book that glorifies the samuria or any other warrior class but explains how, as modern day warriors we should think and act.
