This is a review of the "free" version.
The images a a bit old - and the resolution is poor in some areas, especially in less urban or "interesting" areas. While these might be detractions - I have to say that the search feature is excellent - the flyover tool is great (provided that you have the minimum specs - see Google's site for detailshttp://kh.google.com/download/earth/index.html)
For pure "wow" factor - and geeky delight - and a FREE application that is extremely impressive - I recommend this.
I'll still use standard Google Maps, or perhaps Yahoo maps to get driving directions though....

I was dissapointed with the resolution, especially outside of the US, you can't see much at all really!

I was also a little disapointed with the resolution in most areas.

I really enjoy this program. I, personally, use it to view my hometown, places I've been, places I want to see. It also saves the hassle of trying to explain to friends/family where you lived, what it looked like ect... I also think it would be great for kids, they would be able to familiarize themselves with the planet. Another good use is Vacation planning. There is Food, lodging, road, Building, Banks and Lounge locators, and many more.

Don't know if I would plan road trips with this anywhere except the USA ( NASA coverage ). My friend's yellow VW Beetle is still visible on google earth and he sold that 5 years ago.
